Overview

We invite motivated and passionate individuals to join our esteemed, friendly team at a cutting-edge, UKAS 15189 accredited regional immunology laboratory. Candidates must be registered Biomedical Scientists with the HPC. Appointment will primarily be at Band 5 pay scale, with Band 6 considered for those who have completed or are near completion of an Immunology Specialist portfolio. This role supports continuous professional growth and is part of an IBMS approved training laboratory.

About the Employer

The role is within Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, part of a collaborative pathology network spanning four healthcare providers in Lancashire and South Cumbria. Together they aim to unify pathology services into a single entity for enhanced care delivery.

Laboratory Environment and Equipment

The laboratory is well-resourced, featuring state-of-the-art equipment such as Navios flow cytometers, DSII ELISA processors, Capillarys 2 Flex, Hydrasys 2 Scan, Euroblot One, Bioplex, Helios slide processors, Phadia analyzers, and BNII systems. Staff rotate between immunology sections including autoimmunity, flow cytometry, immunochemistry, and allergy diagnostics, gaining expertise both in automation and specialist manual techniques.

Role Responsibilities

Carry out biomedical scientific duties in compliance with HCPC standards.
Handle specimens correctly before and after analysis to maintain integrity.
Operate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment involved in specimen preparation and testing.
Conduct a variety of laboratory tests independently while understanding their scientific principles and related disease processes.
Identify risks affecting sample integrity and react appropriately to analytical results, considering reagents and alternative tests.
Utilize laboratory computer systems effectively to meet service needs.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

Degree or equivalent qualification compatible with HCPC registration.
Current HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist status.
Relevant experience working within clinical pathology laboratories.
Familiarity with health and safety regulations in clinical lab environments.
Knowledge of quality management systems and commitment to professional development.

Desirable Attributes:

Problem solving skills and understanding of laboratory quality concerns.
Experience using pathology Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
In-depth knowledge of immunological mechanisms in health and disease.
IBMS membership is advantageous.

Additional Information and Conditions

This position requires a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service check due to Rehabilitation of Offenders Act exceptions.
Candidates must hold active professional registration in the UK.
The post is part of a wider pathology collaboration between multiple NHS trusts.
