Role overview

The University City of Gießen is hiring several permanent full-time waste collection workers for the municipal cleaning and fleet department. The position starts as soon as possible and is classified under pay group 3 of the public service collective agreement (TVöD).

Key duties

  • Collect waste across the city, including emptying residual, organic, and paper bins, and picking up bulky waste, electronic scrap, and recyclable materials.
  • Support street cleaning operations, winter service, and special assignments when needed.
  • Carry out other operational tasks as part of the municipal service.

What we are looking for

  • Full physical fitness for unrestricted operational work.
  • Prior professional experience in a similar role is an advantage.
  • Valid driving licence category B is required.
  • Category C driving licence is desirable, ideally with key number 95 or a driver qualification certificate.
  • A strong service mindset, willingness to work, reliability, accountability, and a courteous manner even in difficult situations.
  • Ability to work well in a team and flexibility to operate in changing small groups.
  • Good written and spoken German skills at B1 level.
  • Ability to work in diverse teams and contribute to an inclusive work environment.

Working conditions

Applicants must be prepared to work on Saturdays as well as Sundays and public holidays. For winter service, on-call duty may be required, and work outside regular hours or beyond standard working time may be necessary for special occasions. Shift work is not planned at present, but the employer explicitly reserves the right to introduce it.

Benefits

  • Varied and responsible work in a motivated team.
  • Attractive training and professional development opportunities.
  • A diverse, future-oriented, and meaningful area of responsibility.
  • Health promotion initiatives.
  • Free admission to the Gießen swimming pools in 2026.
  • Good shopping options and nearby natural surroundings.
  • Occupational pension provision.
  • TVöD special payments for employees.
  • A job ticket valid across the entire RMV area.
  • Company bike leasing.

Additional information

In line with the Hessian Equal Rights Act, the employer is committed to increasing the proportion of women, so applications from women are especially welcome. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if equally qualified. Applications from professionals with a migration background are also encouraged for this modern, open, citizen-focused administration.

The full-time positions can also be filled on a part-time basis in principle.

The City of Gießen stands for equality, anti-discrimination, and equal opportunity, and seeks employees who help uphold these values.

Voluntary work is valued. If you have relevant volunteer experience, you should mention it in your application documents, as skills gained through volunteering may be considered positively where they are relevant to the role.

Complete application documents such as a CV and certificates should be submitted by 26 July 2026. For further information, contact Ms Brigitte Schäfer from the Main and Personnel Office at 0641 306-1037.
