Role overview

NHS Lothian is hiring a Modern Apprenticeship Biomedical Support Worker within the Department of Laboratory Medicine. This Band 3 Annex 21 opportunity is part of a two-year apprenticeship in which the selected candidate will join the blood science laboratory reception area and support the laboratory team while building practical experience in pre-analytical work.

The apprenticeship combines workplace training with study at the School of Health, Science and Technology on a day-release basis. During the programme, the postholder will work toward a Higher National Certificate in Applied Science along with a vocational qualification.

There are three possible base locations for this position: St John’s Hospital, Western General Hospital, or the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. The role is full time, 36 hours per week, and the contract is permanent.

Pay and training arrangement

Pay is linked to the Band 3 scale under Annex 21. In year 1, the apprentice will receive 70% of Band 3 pay, rising to 75% in year 2. Once training is completed, the postholder will move to the standard Band 3 salary rate.

Eligibility

Applicants must be aged between 16 and 24 years, or up to 29 years old if they have a disability or are care experienced. To be eligible, candidates must hold Chemistry and Biology at Higher level with grade C or above, plus Maths at National level 5 with grade C or above, or NC Applied Science Level 6.

Selection will also consider values, attitude, willingness to learn, and how well the applicant aligns with the organisation’s people-focused approach. The assessment questions are an important part of the application and should clearly show enthusiasm, adaptability, and a proactive mindset.

Application notes

Applicants are advised to read all attached documents carefully, as they contain guidance on completing the application and outline what is expected in a Modern Apprenticeship role.

The organisation expects strong interest in this vacancy and may close it early once enough suitable applications have been received, so early submission is recommended.

Successful interview candidates must be able to begin with NHS Lothian on Monday 10 August 2026, and this start date cannot be changed.

Contract details
