Role overview

This locksmith role sits within the General Support Shop of the Engineering Service Line at the VA Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia. The position focuses on installing, servicing, and troubleshooting a wide range of locking and security hardware used throughout the facility.

Key duties

• Fit and adjust commercially made locks and related devices, including combination locks used on safes, vaults, cabinets, and chests.
• Install systems that may combine mechanical and electronic features, including timing mechanisms, actuators, and dual-lock configurations.
• Build and manage key-coding systems, confirm keyway compatibility using technical manuals and software tools, and maintain the facility key plan.
• Use arithmetic and pin sizing to establish the correct code for locking systems.
• Diagnose issues in electronic key systems such as key failures, dead batteries, and outages in wall-mounted programmers.
• Install, maintain, and repair remote-controlled electronic and magnetic locking systems.
• Identify and correct faults in mechanical security systems and isolate malfunctioning components in lockouts.
• Service the mechanical portions of security and surveillance systems.
• Inspect, repair, and rework locks as needed.
• Troubleshoot locking mechanisms connected with monitors, alarms, sensors, timers, and other integrated security equipment.
• Take apart locks, examine them for tool marks, wear, abrasion, misalignment, and possible tampering, and apply advanced neutralization methods when needed.
• Carry out additional related tasks as assigned.

Working conditions

This work may involve standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, and working in awkward positions for extended periods. Lifting or carrying generally does not exceed 50 pounds. Most work is performed indoors in areas that are lit, heated, and ventilated, but occasional outdoor work may be required in poor weather or in drafty, dimly lit areas. The role may also require work from ladders, scaffolds, or other elevated locations, with some risk of falls. Exposure to cuts, bruises, burns, noise, dust, and fumes can occur while using tools and equipment.

Qualification notes

Applicants are assessed under the OPM Federal Wage System qualification approach using the job element method. Screening begins with the prescribed screen-out element for WG-2 and above; screen-outs do not apply to WG-1. Candidates who meet the screen-out standard are then evaluated against the remaining job elements. A specific training period is not required, but the resume must clearly document experience with month and year start and end dates. Part-time work is credited based on actual hours worked. Experience may include paid, unpaid, and volunteer service, including work done through National Service programs and other organizations.

Assessment areas

Applicants will be evaluated on equipment assembly, installation and repair, interpreting instructions and specifications including blueprint reading, measuring instruments, technical practices, troubleshooting, and the use and maintenance of tools and equipment without more than normal supervision.

Schedule and hiring details

The work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Recruitment and relocation incentives are not available for this position.

License requirement

A valid, unrestricted state driver’s license is required and must be maintained. Do not include a copy with the application package; the license must be presented at the interview.
