Role overview

This is a one-year fixed-term appointment for a Genetic Technologist to join the Clinical Genomics service at The Royal Marsden. The post calls for a collaborative team member with strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to delivering high-quality laboratory work.

Cytogenetics sits within the Clinical Genomics Department alongside cytogenetics, translational science, and molecular diagnostics. It is among the limited number of specialist cancer genomics laboratories in Europe and provides diagnostic cytogenetics support for haematological malignancies and solid tumours across multiple NHS Trusts and Cancer Networks, while also contributing to clinical trials.

What you will do

The core purpose of the role is to analyse acquired genetic abnormalities using G-band karyotyping and FISH. The work requires close attention to detail, strict adherence to defined procedures, and a consistent focus on producing accurate, high-quality analytical results that support patient diagnosis and treatment.

You will provide technical assistance to scientific teams within the Cytogenetics Laboratory and, where needed, support related pathology or research work. The post-holder is expected to handle G-banded karyotype analysis and FISH analysis with very little supervision, and to work across the department as service needs and procedures evolve.

In addition, you will maintain a good level of competency, step in to cover absent colleagues when required, help train staff and visitors, and carry out clerical and other supporting tasks as needed.
