Fire Crew Chief

Role overview

The Fire Crew Chief supervises a firefighting team responsible for protecting resources and supporting fire response for structures, aircraft, and other hazardous fire situations.

Key duties

• Act as the on-site lead crew member, delivering resource protection and firefighting support in line with Department of Defense requirements, contract terms, and NFPA standards.
• Carry out suppression, rescue, and prevention work as directed by the senior fire officer so response is timely and risk to life and property is reduced.
• Make sure assigned fire personnel, vehicles, and equipment remain ready, operational, and available for use.
• Lead fire attack, containment, salvage, overhaul, ventilation, and rescue operations, including first-responder care, while evaluating options and deciding the best course of action.
• Inspect the emergency scene at the start of an incident, record conditions, and pass relevant details to the supervisor for reporting.
• Guide crew members and take part in the upkeep of firefighting gear, the fire station, and nearby grounds.
• Handle minor staff and administrative matters, escalating significant concerns to the senior fire officer.
• Complete other assigned duties as required.

Skills and knowledge

• Strong spoken and written English for reading codes, explaining plans, delivering training, and preparing reports.
• Comfort using Microsoft Office tools.
• Ability to perform basic arithmetic, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Experience and education

• At least 6 years of experience in fire services.
• A diploma or associate-level qualification in fire science management, emergency management, public administration, or a related field is preferred.
• Recognized fire and hazardous materials certifications are required or preferred depending on assignment, including Fire Fighter I and II, Fire Officer I, Fire Inspector I, Fire Instructor I, HazMat Operations, and Airport Fire Fighter where applicable.
• Hazardous Materials Incident Commander certification is required.
• First Responder and CPR certification is preferred.

Working conditions

The assignment may be in remote and uncomfortable locations. Work can involve long hours, exposure to weather, and hazardous conditions. Team members must be ready to move on short notice and under difficult circumstances.

Travel

This position requires the ability to travel within Kenya and internationally.
