Overview
This role sits within the Hardware Operations function supporting the physical systems that keep Google’s services running. As a Data Center Technician, you will work on deploying, maintaining, testing, and repairing server hardware and related infrastructure in a data center environment. The work combines technical troubleshooting with hands-on physical tasks, including equipment movement and rack installation.

Minimum Qualifications
- Hands-on experience assembling mechanical or electrical systems, or carrying out component-level repairs and troubleshooting on technical equipment.
- Ability to identify and resolve issues in one of these areas: operating systems, computer/server hardware, or networking protocols.
- Physical capability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 lb (23 kg), along with sustained physical effort such as bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
- Flexibility to work non-standard schedules, including weekends, night shifts, holidays, and rotating shift patterns.
Preferred Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 2 years of experience troubleshooting operating systems, computer/server hardware, or networking protocols.
- Experience working with Linux distributions or Unix-based systems, such as Red Hat, Slackware, Fedora, SUSE, Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, or BSD, or a comparable operating system.
- Background in component-level repair and troubleshooting of IT equipment, or experience in a similar technical support role such as systems administration, network deployment engineering, or help desk support.
- Exposure to project leadership and team coordination.
- Experience in a data center or network operations center setting.
Role Summary
Google’s Technical Infrastructure team builds and maintains the systems that support its product portfolio. In this position, you will install and configure hardware and server software, troubleshoot network-connected equipment, support larger rollout projects, and help prepare contingency plans where needed. The role also involves routine maintenance, secure handling of media, and end-of-life disassembly of equipment in coordination with the team.
Responsibilities
- Roll out and support new data center infrastructure across assigned projects or functional areas.
- Identify, document, and troubleshoot equipment and infrastructure issues by following established data center procedures and using the required resources to resolve them.
- Protect data security and integrity by tracking media and verifying that security standards, such as proper data erasure, are met.
- Work with the team to dismantle end-of-life equipment through part replacement or maintenance activities.
- Carry out repairs and preventive maintenance on servers, machines, equipment, and infrastructure based on defined fixes and limited direction.
