About the Organization
Kenya Railways is a state-owned corporation created through an Act of Parliament in 1978. It was set up to run an integrated rail and inland waterways transport network across the country. The organization is responsible for improving rail services, building capability and technical know-how for the railway industry, and supporting the expansion of both national and metropolitan rail systems. After amendments made in 2005 to its founding law, it also received the ability to sign concession and management arrangements for rail operations. Its long-term goal is to be the leading choice for rail transport in Kenya, with a focus on dependable, efficient, sustainable, and customer-oriented services while making productive use of its assets to strengthen the business.
Role Overview
This full-time, on-site Writer position is based in Nairobi County, Kenya. The role focuses on producing polished, accurate, and engaging written material for both internal and public audiences. Content may include reports, press statements, website material, speeches, brochures, and other corporate communication outputs.
What You Will Do
In this role, you will collect information from subject matter experts, carry out background research on rail transport and infrastructure initiatives, and convert technical material into language that is easy to understand. You will support the communications function by preparing copy for media activities, public sensitization efforts, stakeholder briefings, and social media content, while keeping all outputs aligned with brand standards and organizational messaging. The job also involves editing and proofreading documents for clarity, grammar, style, and consistency, as well as coordinating with different departments to deliver work on schedule and to the expected quality.
Qualifications and Skills
The ideal candidate should have strong writing and editing ability, with a track record of creating clear and well-organized content for varied audiences. You should be comfortable researching and compiling information to create accurate, context-aware content related to transport, infrastructure, and public sector work. Experience in corporate communication, public relations, journalism, or a similar field is preferred, especially in government, transport, or infrastructure settings. You should be able to adjust tone and format depending on whether you are preparing reports, speeches, online content, or social media updates. Excellent English language skills are required, and knowledge of Kiswahili or other local languages will be an advantage. Attention to detail is important, particularly for grammar, punctuation, and consistency with house style and branding. The role also calls for strong teamwork, the ability to work with technical staff, management, and outside stakeholders, and the capacity to manage several assignments under tight deadlines. A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Public Relations, or a closely related discipline is expected, although equivalent relevant experience may also be considered. Good organization and time management are necessary, along with familiarity with basic office and publishing tools such as word processors, presentation software, and document management systems.
