Role overview
This full-time ongoing position is with an independent co-educational college in Perth, Western Australia, teaching from Pre-Kindergarten through Year 12 in the Christian tradition. The school is described as progressive, forward-looking, and supported by a strong leadership team. The role is expected to commence as soon as possible, with timing to be negotiated.
Position purpose
The Risk & Compliance Officer will take ownership of the College’s governance, risk, compliance, and work health and safety frameworks. The role works closely with leaders, managers, and staff to strengthen a culture of compliance and risk awareness, support adherence to Non-Government School (NGS) Registration Standards and relevant legislation, and provide reporting that supports decision-making.
Reporting line
This position reports to the Director of Finance & Operations.
Key responsibilities
- Align governance, risk, and compliance processes with the College’s strategic direction.
- Provide assurance to stakeholders regarding compliance with NGS Registration Standards and related legal obligations.
- Promote a strong culture of risk and compliance awareness through staff training and mentoring across all levels.
- Create and maintain a policy management framework so policies remain current and accessible to staff.
- Review policies and procedures to ensure they match NGS Registration Standards, applicable legislation, and other requirements, while also being benchmarked against Department of Education and AISWA practices.
- Deliver training to staff on policies and procedures when needed.
- Design a school-wide risk management approach based on best practice and Australian Standards, including a Risk Appetite Statement.
- Maintain risk registers and prepare risk reports for the Board and Principal.
- Oversee the WHS hazard register and the risk assessment process.
- Provide risk management training to staff as required.
- Monitor compliance with NGS Registration Standards and all other relevant obligations.
- Keep up to date with legislative and regulatory changes that could affect the school.
- Report compliance activities objectively to the Principal and Board.
- Train staff on compliance matters as required.
- Coordinate WHS hazard registers, risk assessments, and corrective actions with departments through safety representatives.
- Set up systems for incident reporting.
- Support effective incident management.
- Build processes to investigate incidents and analyse incident data.
- Prepare incident reports for the Principal and management.
Candidate profile
The school is seeking someone with practical experience across risk management, assurance, and compliance. A strong grasp of risk and compliance theory and practice is essential, along with experience in a similar role and a sound understanding of modern risk management methods, ideally gained in a school or education environment. Knowledge of workplace health and safety legislation in Western Australia is required, as well as strong organisational, administrative, and planning capability.
Qualifications
Tertiary qualifications in Commerce, Law, Insurance, Risk Management, or a related field are preferred, or progress toward such qualifications. A Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is desirable.
