Role overview

As a Courier Driver, you will move pathology samples and other essential medical items safely, promptly, and dependably between hospitals, GP practices, and community diagnostic centres. Your work will help speed up accurate diagnosis and treatment for patients every day.

Purpose of the role

This position plays a vital part in the Path Links network by ensuring that time-critical pathology materials are transported efficiently between healthcare locations. The role supports laboratories in processing samples accurately and on time, which helps clinicians make timely decisions and improves patient care across the wider NHS pathology service.

Depot coverage

Courier Driver positions are operated from one of three main depots, each serving a defined area. The Lincoln Depot covers Goole, Scunthorpe, Grantham, Lincoln, Boston, Nottingham, Sheffield, and Doncaster, along with broader parts of North Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire.

Key duties

  • Transport and collect pathology specimens, mail, stores, supplies, stationery, and equipment, obtaining signatures where required.
  • Collect samples from surgeries, hospitals, and clinics, including occasional transfers of bodies between Path Links mortuaries.
  • Carry out daily vehicle checks covering fuel, water, oil, tyres, and lights, and keep the vehicle clean and roadworthy.
  • Follow safety procedures at all times, identify hazards to yourself and others, and report or resolve issues quickly.
  • Report accidents and incidents accurately and without delay to the appropriate person.
  • Complete administrative records such as vehicle logs and proof-of-delivery forms with accuracy.
  • Protect confidentiality in line with Trust policies.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous approach when dealing with the Trust and primary care partners.
  • Attend mandatory training and comply with Trust, departmental, and health and safety requirements.
