Operational Support Grade (Prison Support)

Role overview

HMP Guys Marsh is recruiting an Operational Support Grade (OSG) to help keep the prison operating safely and efficiently. This position sits within His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service and supports a busy day-to-day environment.

The work is varied and active, combining desk-based duties with practical tasks such as lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison site to escort vehicles. The role is part of a supportive team and includes contributing to security, visitor management, deliveries, phone monitoring, and CCTV checks.

• Carrying out security-related checks and searches at the gate
• Managing incoming deliveries
• Supervising visitors
• Monitoring phone calls and CCTV
• Supporting the smooth daily running of the prison
• Handling a mix of administrative and physically active duties

Who this role suits

No formal qualifications are needed. The ideal candidate is a clear communicator who stays composed in pressurised situations, uses common sense and sound judgement, and works well as part of a team.

The post is shift-based and includes weekend and night working.

Career development

This role offers a route into prison operations and can build valuable knowledge about how a prison functions. It may also create opportunities to move into other prison roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion pathway.

Training and support

Successful candidates will receive training along with opportunities to progress and develop within the service.

Pay and benefits

The salary for this post is £29,432.
