Role overview
The Business Operations Manager will take charge of Berwick Care’s daily supply operations, making sure high-quality products reach care homes on time, in a cost-conscious way, and with dependable service. The position exists to support safe, compliant, and effective care by ensuring clients always have the supplies they need.
This person will manage procurement, stock control, and distribution activities, while building productive supplier relationships and keeping operations aligned with quality, health, and safety expectations. The role also focuses on improving processes, using resources wisely, and lowering costs without reducing service levels.
Working alongside senior leaders, the manager will help the business grow by improving client relationships, raising service performance, and spotting opportunities to streamline operations and broaden the company’s offering. The role is expected to encourage accountability, responsiveness, and strong performance across the operations function.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the everyday running of operational activity across the business.
- Make sure customer orders are handled correctly and delivered within agreed timelines.
- Keep an eye on workflows so efficiency and service quality remain high.
- Act quickly to resolve operational problems and reduce disruption.
- Align teams to shared processes, priorities, and ways of working.
Supply chain and procurement
- Handle the full procurement cycle, from sourcing through to delivery.
- Agree pricing, terms, and service expectations with suppliers.
- Measure supplier performance against KPIs and agreed standards.
- Build dependable supplier partnerships that support consistent service.
- Look for alternative suppliers to reduce risk and improve value.
Stock and inventory control
- Keep stock records accurate and maintain effective inventory systems.
- Track stock levels to avoid shortages and excessive holding.
- Review usage patterns to improve forecasting and ordering routines.
- Apply stock control methods that reduce waste and loss.
- Carry out routine stock counts, checks, and reconciliations.
Logistics and distribution
- Oversee warehousing, picking, packing, and dispatch operations.
- Ensure deliveries are planned and completed efficiently.
- Monitor delivery results and fix delays or mistakes.
- Work with logistics partners to improve reliability and keep costs down.
- Regularly review distribution processes and make improvements.
Compliance, quality, and safety
- Maintain compliance with health and safety requirements across the operation.
- Protect product quality in line with expectations in the care sector.
- Ensure documentation and traceability processes are properly in place.
- Carry out checks and audits to confirm compliance standards are met.
- Support a safe working environment for all staff members.
Client and customer management
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with care home clients.
- Ensure client expectations and service needs are consistently met.
- Deal with complaints and service problems promptly and professionally.
- Use client feedback to identify improvements.
- Support customer retention and long-term satisfaction.
Budgeting and cost control
- Monitor operational budgets and manage costs responsibly.
- Find ways to cut spending without affecting quality.
- Track financial performance and report differences to senior management.
- Support pricing decisions through cost analysis.

Team leadership
- Lead and support the operations team in day-to-day work.
- Set clear goals and performance expectations.

- Track KPIs such as delivery speed, accuracy, and cost efficiency.

- Background in supply chain work, including procurement, inventory control, and logistics.
- Strong organisation and time management skills, with close attention to detail.
- Confident leadership and people management skills, including the ability to motivate and develop teams.
- Sound financial understanding, including budgeting, cost control, and efficiency improvements.
- Strong communication and relationship-building ability with clients and suppliers.
- Good problem-solving and decision-making skills, including working well under pressure.
- Awareness of health and safety requirements in a warehouse or operational setting.
- Comfort using IT systems such as Microsoft Office and stock/order management software.
- Understanding of customer service principles and the importance of high service standards.
Desirable
- Experience in care supplies, healthcare, or another regulated environment.
- Knowledge of compliance and quality expectations relevant to the care sector.
- Experience with inventory management tools or ERP platforms.
- A formal management qualification such as ILM, CMI, or similar.
- Health and safety training such as IOSH or equivalent.
- Experience in contract management and supplier negotiation.
- Understanding of logistics and distribution optimisation.
- Exposure to business improvement or lean/process improvement methods.
- A full UK driving licence.
