Applied Scientist

Role overview

Audible is seeking an Applied Scientist in Berlin to help build advanced, production-ready solutions that improve customer experiences at scale. In this role, you will work on complex real-world problems and shape solutions across machine learning, artificial intelligence, generative AI, natural language processing, reinforcement learning, and distributed systems.

What you will do

• Identify business use cases that are not clearly defined and create scalable, efficient, and automated scientific solutions for them.
• Partner with scientists and software engineers from Audible and Amazon to build, launch, and improve models and high-impact product features.
• Evaluate peer models to reduce business risk and strengthen customer outcomes.
• Design and deploy modeling approaches for content understanding, recommendations, and GenAI-powered product experiences, using techniques ranging from simpler methods to more advanced ones.
• Contribute to fast-moving experiments that apply the latest ML and AI advances.
• Continuously expand the limits of what can be built through science and innovation.

What the role requires

You are expected to invent or adapt scientific methods, models, and algorithms based on customer and project needs. Your work should be suitable for production use or directly support production systems. You will be responsible for reusable science services and components that address architectural gaps and customer pain points, while balancing long-term and short-term technical trade-offs. The role calls for semi-autonomous execution, strong documentation, and the ability to support research publications when appropriate. Decisions should be grounded in sound data-driven business and technical judgment, and you should be comfortable collaborating with other scientists to raise the technical standard of the team.

Qualifications

A strong background in machine learning, deep learning, NLP, GenAI, and/or large-scale distributed computation is required. The role also calls for programming ability, quantitative problem-solving, and hands-on experience taking models into business use.

Basic qualifications

• At least 3 years of experience building models for business applications.
• A PhD, or a Master’s degree plus 4+ years of experience in computer science, computer engineering, machine learning, or a related field.
• Evidence of patents or publications in leading peer-reviewed conferences or journals.
• Programming experience in Java, C++, Python, or a similar language.
• Experience in one or more of the following: algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, or high-performance computing.
• MSc plus 5 years of relevant experience, or PhD plus 1 year of experience, in machine learning, computer science, computer engineering, data science, applied mathematics, or another quantitative discipline.
• At least 3 years of experience in deep learning, NLP/understanding, GenAI, and/or reinforcement learning.
• Strong command of Python, SQL, and other scripting languages.
• Experience using LLMs/GenAI to solve complex problems and improve existing solutions.

Preferred qualifications

• Comfort working in Unix/Linux environments.
• Background in professional software development.
• Experience building recommendation systems.
• Experience orchestrating ML pipelines with AWS tools such as SageMaker, Batch, Lambda, and Step Functions, or similar cloud platforms.
