About the company
Vessev is creating a new kind of marine transport through hydrofoiling electric vessels built to improve both people’s experience and environmental impact. Their boats rise above the water using advanced hydrofoils, control systems, and electric propulsion, and they are designed and manufactured in Aotearoa.
The company is gaining momentum and heading toward major growth milestones, and this role offers a rare chance to support the assembly of the mechanical systems behind its next-generation fleet.
Role overview
The Hydrofoil Systems team is a core part of Vessev’s foiling capability. The team’s work helps the vessel run efficiently on foils and contributes directly to the performance of the complete product.
Because production and design operate from the same facility, the build teams work closely with engineers. The work is varied from day to day and includes mechanical assembly, improving internal processes, and managing the workspace, along with other tasks needed to support the team’s goals.
What you will do
In this position, you will assemble mechanical components and systems using technical drawings, schematics, and build instructions, and you will check completed work to make sure it meets the required quality and specification standards.
You will also diagnose and fix mechanical faults both on the vessel and in the workshop, apply corrective actions where needed, and perform regular maintenance on assembly tools and equipment.
Another key part of the job is keeping accurate records of the build process, including parts used, time taken for each assembly, and any issues encountered during vessel production and fit-out.
Working with design engineers and the wider production team, you will share feedback on assembly methods, suggest improvements, and maintain clear documentation of work processes.
You will monitor stock levels for mechanical parts and materials, flag shortages when necessary, and help keep the workshop and assembly areas tidy, organised, and ready for efficient production.
About you
You do not need to be an expert in marine or electric vehicle systems, but you should have solid experience with mechanical assemblies and be comfortable working to high standards. The right person will be proactive, self-driven, eager to learn, and able to work efficiently.
Required experience and qualifications
- A Level 4 New Zealand certificate in Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship, or a similar qualification.
- Training and practical experience as a Mechanical Technician, with a proven background in mechanical assembly work.
- A strong grasp of mechanical systems and assembly methods.
- Safe and effective use of hand tools and power tools.
- Ability to understand technical documents, drawings, and instructions.
- Comfort working with digital work orders and process documentation.
- A curious mindset with a drive to solve problems, innovate, and push beyond conventional thinking.
- Flexibility and the ability to adapt quickly to change.
Preferred experience
- Background in marine, motorsport, or aerospace environments is an advantage, though not essential.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Strong determination, quick thinking, and good judgment.
About the workplace
Vessev is focused on building a better future through cleaner air, better commutes, and deeper connections with nature and one another. Its hydrofoiling electric vessels can use up to 90% less energy than conventional boats, creating new possibilities for marine transport.
The company is supported by leading investors including Blackbird Ventures, and the team includes people with experience from the America’s Cup, SpaceX, Rocket Lab, Halter, Apple, and climate-tech startups. The culture values purpose, humility, and optimism over titles.
Vessev works primarily in person but is not strictly office-only. The company believes great work comes from building together in the same space, while also trusting people to manage their responsibilities in a balanced way.
Why people enjoy working here
- You get to help build something genuinely different, from the product itself to the kind of workplace being shaped around it.
- The work has the potential to create meaningful long-term impact.
- You will be part of a highly capable and collaborative team.
- Primary caregivers receive 20 weeks of fully paid parental leave, and secondary caregivers receive 4 weeks, subject to conditions.
- Pay is competitive and designed to reflect the value of the work.
- Being on the water is part of the experience, with vessel trips and offices located near the Tamaki River.
- If you enjoy boating or water sports, you will be surrounded by people who share those interests.
How to apply
Applicants should submit a CV and a short cover letter explaining who they are and why the role is a strong fit.
Equal opportunity note
Vessev encourages people from under-represented groups to apply even if they do not meet every requirement, as the company values potential and wants to build a team where everyone can do their best work.
