Role Overview
This position is for a Field Protection Engineer based in Abu Dhabi, supporting Siemens’ energy automation and protection work within Smart Infrastructure. The role focuses on testing and commissioning protection and automation systems for major power transmission projects across the UAE and the wider Middle East.
The opportunity is designed for engineers who want international exposure, hands-on work with advanced substation technologies, and experience in large-scale critical infrastructure projects.
What You Will Do
- Carry out testing and commissioning activities for protection and automation solutions used in Siemens projects.
- Prepare SAT and FAT protocols, along with the related technical records and documentation.
- Support pre-FAT and FAT sessions with customers for protection panels such as AVR, LIBBP, HIBBP, TIP, and similar systems.
- Develop commissioning procedures, including method statements, work permits, and test plans.
- Contribute product feedback and support approval and improvement efforts.
- Deliver technical briefings and presentations to customers and other stakeholders.
- Investigate faults and perform root-cause analysis on protection systems.
Technical Profile
The successful candidate should hold a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or Electrical & Communication Engineering and bring 3 to 5 years of experience in protection and automation commissioning. Experience working in multicultural project environments is important, and prior exposure to substation protection projects in the Middle East or other international markets will be a strong advantage.
Hands-on familiarity is expected with Siemens protection platforms such as SIPROTEC 4, SIPROTEC 5, and Reyrolle. The role also calls for knowledge of power quality systems, substation automation, IEC 61850 communication, GOOSE-based applications, relay configuration tools, and control logic development using BCPU/BCU, SCD/ICD/CID files, and related industrial communication protocols.
Testing and commissioning expertise should include advanced use of OMICRON test equipment and Test Universe (TU 4.20 or newer), along with modules such as Distance, Line Differential, Transformer Differential, State Sequencer, Ramping, Transplay, and OCC files. Experience with high-voltage transmission protection schemes is needed, including line distance protection, line differential protection, transformer main and backup protection, and busbar protection for low- and high-impedance systems. Additional exposure to stability testing using CMGPS kits, differential protection testing for transformers, shunt reactors, and series reactors, as well as modern digital substation technologies like Process Bus and RTU integration, is beneficial.
Personal Attributes
- Self-driven and able to solve problems independently.
- Comfortable working with international project teams.
- Strong in customer communication and technical interaction.
- Fluent in English.
Why This Role Stands Out
- Opportunity to work on international projects across the Middle East with a multicultural engineering team.
- Chance to grow your career with a global technology leader.
- Based in Abu Dhabi, a major regional hub known for safety and quality of life.
