Site Operative / Material Controller

Role overview

This position sits within the construction team and supports the day-to-day running of a busy housing site. The work involves a mix of material handling, site presentation, safety checks, and general upkeep across a high-volume housebuilding environment. The role reports to the Site Manager and is expected to be delivered to a high standard and within required deadlines.

The business operates across around 400 developments across the UK, in both urban and rural locations. Projects may be new builds on brownfield land or the refurbishment and conversion of existing structures such as former factories or unused hospitals. The wider construction team is known for strong professional standards and for achieving more NHBC Pride in the Job Awards than any other housebuilder for 13 consecutive years.

Key duties

• Complete all site tasks as directed by the Site Manager and follow company standards and procedures at all times.
• Keep all site signage in good condition, including sales boards, plot signage, and safety notices, and make sure they remain clean and presentable.
• Take ownership of health and safety on site and escalate any breaches to the Site Manager without delay.
• Make sure any fixed materials are protected by the subcontractor installing them, in line with company procedure.
• Ensure protective materials stay in place for as long as possible and inform the Site Manager if anyone removes or misuses them permanently.
• Maintain the compound area and welfare facilities so they remain clean and serviceable.
• Help keep all plots under construction tidy and clear for all trades working on site.
• Carry out a daily walk-around of plots under construction to check that no excess materials are left behind.
• Make sure site waste is separated correctly and recycled in line with group guidelines.
• Check show-home gardens and public open spaces every week and remove any litter that has blown into these areas.

Candidate profile

The company is looking for someone who is proactive, able to take initiative, and comfortable working independently without close supervision. Previous experience on large-volume residential housebuilding sites is important, along with a strong awareness of health and safety. A valid CSCS card or an accepted partner-scheme card is required.
