Role level and work setting
At this grade, the lieutenant is responsible for security operations on an assigned shift or unit in a minimum-security facility or hospital security unit, while supervising first-line supervisors who manage individual units or activities. The role may also cover special units in medium or maximum-security settings such as central control, gun gang operations, detention or restrictive housing, mental health units, or team command for the Correctional Emergency Response Team.
Experience and education needed
Applicants must bring 3 years of correctional or security experience with a government agency or a private corrections organization. In addition, candidates must satisfy the statutory requirements for correctional officers, including being at least 20 years old and meeting one of the following education/training combinations: 30 semester hours from an accredited college or university, or a high school diploma/GED plus completion of a Department-approved correctional training course certified by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training, completed before hire or within the first 6 months of employment. GED completion is evaluated under Oklahoma Department of Education standards.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
The position calls for working knowledge of supervision, shift staffing, scheduling, inmate discipline, inmate behavior, firearms handling, restraint methods, English usage, basic math, and report preparation. The job also requires the ability to build effective working relationships, follow instructions, collect and organize facts, write clear reports, respond quickly in emergencies, communicate security procedures, remain proficient with firearms, and manage conflict within the inmate population.
Special conditions and legal requirements
Applicants must demonstrate good moral character, complete an approved correctional officer training program before working alone, and pass an annual physical aligned with Department of Corrections standards. A valid driver’s license is required at appointment so the person can travel as needed. Drug screening is mandatory. The employee must be willing to work any shift or any day of the week.
Some employees in this classification may be designated as peace officers and may need to meet additional training and screening requirements certified by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training. Certain disqualifying criminal and service histories make a person ineligible for this role, including specific sex offense registrations, crimes involving moral turpitude without a full pardon, felony convictions without a full pardon, certain domestic violence misdemeanors or restraining orders under federal law, and dishonorable discharge from military service.
