About the role

Rako Science, part of Awanui Group, is seeking a permanent part-time Specimen Collection Technician based in New Lynn, Auckland. The organisation operates within New Zealand’s largest network of human and veterinary pathology laboratories, with 25 laboratories and more than 150 collection points nationwide. Its focus is on supporting better health outcomes through practical, innovative services.

In this position, you will assist the Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Court programme by carrying out professional urine and oral fluid testing. The role involves direct interaction with participants and requires that every collection is completed accurately, respectfully, and in line with strict chain-of-custody standards.

This is a rotating roster role totalling 50 hours per fortnight. Usual shift times are 10:00am to 6:00pm for clinic work and 7:00am to 2:00pm for residential collections. The schedule may also include occasional weekends and public holidays. You will work across the West Auckland collection facility and other assigned locations, combining specimen collection, participant support, and administration to help keep the programme running smoothly.

Key responsibilities

  • Carry out urine and oral fluid sample collections in line with programme rules and procedures.
  • Confirm participant identity and maintain accurate chain-of-custody records.
  • Handle participant-related administration and keep both electronic and paper records up to date.
  • Gather monitoring information and flag any programme inconsistencies when needed.
  • Make sure all testing, paperwork, and day-to-day activities meet programme, quality, and safety requirements.
  • Develop and maintain respectful professional relationships with participants and relevant stakeholders.
  • Offer general administrative assistance and support additional tasks as required.

About you

To be effective in this role, you will bring strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while protecting confidentiality at all times. You should be comfortable working with people from different backgrounds and managing multiple tasks efficiently.

You must have a full, clean New Zealand driver licence, be available for rotating shifts including weekends and public holidays, and be willing to travel to locations across Auckland and Waikato as needed. Good computer literacy is also essential.

Values and support

Rako Science works from three guiding values: Manaakitanga, meaning care and support for others; Whakapakari, meaning improvement and adaptability; and Hiranga, meaning delivery of high-quality medical and scientific expertise.

The organisation provides thorough on-the-job training and ongoing support to help you perform well in the role. You will also have access to a highly automated, technically advanced laboratory environment and learning opportunities through the in-house Learning and Development team to support your growth and professional competency.

Additional information

This is a permanent part-time position. The application closing date is 19 July 2026.
