Senior Engineer - Azure Data Engineering

About the role

LAB3 is a major Azure-focused engineering practice across Australasia, with expertise spanning cloud and DevOps, data, IoT and AI, modern workplace, modern applications and integration, security, and networking services. The business is looking for a Senior Data Engineer with strong Azure Data Engineering experience, and Fabric experience is preferred. This is a 3-month contract opportunity with the possibility of extension.

The position is based in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand, and requires an onsite presence. Candidates must be located in New Zealand and must have lived in the country for at least 5 years to meet government security clearance requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Own the engineering, support, and delivery of advanced Azure-based data platform solutions.
• Take the lead on end-to-end planning, provisioning, and implementation of Azure data services.
• Bring infrastructure and automation know-how to support delivery of data warehousing, data functions, and full data analytics solutions.
• Build solutions with Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, Azure Data Warehousing, Data Lakes, and Application Insights.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into practical solutions aligned to data domains and technology capabilities.
• Support warehousing activities including data manipulation, migration, and integration.
• Manage complex Microsoft PaaS SQL Server environments, including high-availability setups such as SQL clusters, Always On, and Availability Groups, and assist with migration of on-premises services to Azure cloud platforms.
• Configure logging through Log Analytics Workspace and diagnostic settings.
• Support internal and external engineers with data platform setup for ingestion, transformation, extraction, and cleansing.

Required experience and skills

• Substantial experience in Azure Data Engineering, including delivery and solution design; Fabric experience is highly desirable.
• Strong ability to interpret business needs and convert them into effective technical solutions.
• Deep knowledge of Azure data platform tools and Microsoft cloud analytics frameworks, including data cataloguing, data lineage, and machine learning.
• Hands-on expertise with Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Warehousing, Azure Synapse, Azure Databricks, data modelling, Azure SQL, large-scale data processing, Data Lakes, Application Insights, and Fabric.
• Strong background in Microsoft BI tools such as SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS.
• Solid understanding of database principles, including SQL Server, Azure SQL DB/MI, and application services configuration.
• Experience with Azure DevOps, automation, DevOps integration, and DataOps practices.
• Familiarity with a wider Azure ecosystem including CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, ETL, Cosmos DB, Event Hub, scorecards, reporting, dashboards, SOA, and programming.
• Exposure to technologies such as T-SQL, Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, Python, Scala, Impala, R, and Power BI is an advantage.

Eligibility

Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents who have lived in New Zealand for more than 5 years so they can qualify for government security clearance. Candidates should be available within 2 weeks to begin a 3-month contract and be open to a daily-rate engagement. Applicants can be based anywhere in New Zealand.
