Machine Utility Operator

Role overview

This full-time, on-site role in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia is for a Machine Utility Operator who will keep essential plant utilities running safely and efficiently. The position covers the operation, monitoring, and routine adjustment of equipment that supports production continuity and output quality.

Core duties

You will be responsible for overseeing key utility systems, including a boiler, chiller, air compressor, generator, and water treatment systems, with safety treated as the highest priority. The role also involves running the plant in a way that minimizes losses and helps maximize production yield. Any changes to process settings should be made only after consulting the utility engineer.

Utility supply must remain available in the required quantity and quality. For the boiler, you will track feed water quality and temperature. For the generator, you will monitor fuel and oil levels. For the chiller, you will check operating gas pressure and chilled water circulation. For the air compressor, you will watch working pressure and temperature.

All operating equipment must be inspected regularly, at least once every two hours. You will also record operating parameters and utility consumption, then report findings to the utility engineer, especially if any deviation is observed.

Maintenance, safety, and support

The job includes diagnosing and resolving utility issues when possible, and escalating equipment problems that need further attention or repair to the utility engineer. You are expected to keep improving your operating skills, reduce energy costs, and continuously look for better ways of working. Strong safety awareness is essential, along with ongoing learning in safety practices and techniques.

Regular cleaning is required to keep machines in excellent condition. You will also carry out routine inspections and preventive maintenance on utility equipment, assess risk areas frequently, and report concerns to the EHS Head and Production Head. In addition, you will support the EHS team and staff association in maintaining a safe, hazard-free working environment. Other related tasks may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications

Candidates should have experience working with industrial or manufacturing machinery and be comfortable following machine setup instructions and operating procedures. A practical mechanical background is needed, along with familiarity with equipment checks, small adjustments, and preventive maintenance tasks.

Applicants must demonstrate strong safety awareness, including proper use of PPE, compliance with safety standards, and safe handling of materials. The ability to read and follow work orders, production schedules, and simple technical instructions or diagrams is also required.

A minimum of Level-II qualification in General Mechanic, industrial, electrical, or another technical field is required, along with at least 3 years of experience in an FMCG industry.
