Junior Software Engineer

Role overview

We are recruiting for a partner of Haystack for a Junior Software Engineer position based in Washington, DC. This is a full-time, on-site opportunity for someone looking to grow in backend and web application development while working closely with experienced engineers.

What you will do

• Develop reliable and easy-to-maintain code in Python for backend systems and web application functionality.
• Work alongside senior team members to help design, build, and improve software solutions.
• Write unit tests and participate in code reviews to support software quality and consistency.
• Assist with front-end work by creating responsive user interfaces and reusable components.
• Improve SQL performance and help structure schemas for relational databases.
• Package applications in Docker and manage container images as part of deployment workflows.

Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in an IT-related discipline.
• At least 1 year of relevant experience in software development.
• Strong hands-on experience with Python for scripting, backend services, and RESTful APIs.
• Working knowledge of Git for source control and team-based collaboration.
• Familiarity with SQL and relational database systems.
• Good understanding of HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript.
• Strong ability to solve problems, communicate clearly, and manage time effectively.
