It values initiative, accountability, and growth, and many leaders began their careers in entry-level positions within the organization.

Role overview

KWE is hiring a Customs Release Agent to help run and continuously improve the Customs Department. The role involves monitoring shipments through the KWE customs entry production system and carrier portals when required, as well as receiving and checking shipments entering Canada by courier, air, ocean, truck, and rail. You will also prepare and submit documentation electronically to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) through KWE systems to support the release of commercial goods.

Key duties

  • Deliver customs support to clients and carriers by tracing and tracking shipments, checking charges, and raising cheque requests.
  • Scan and digitize documents through the DM Document Management tool and file them correctly.
  • Handle shipment processing under the SWI (Single Window Initiative) with the relevant Participating Government Agencies (PGAs), using the client’s HS code database.
  • Make sure all extra charges are captured on entries for client billing, including terminal fees, storage, dock delivery, and similar items.
  • Know how to process credit release requests during normal business hours and after hours.
  • Review paperwork for customs-clearance accuracy and follow up with clients, carriers, or vendors when information is incomplete.
  • Keep clients and carriers updated on delays and escalate matters to the Senior Customs Specialist when needed.
  • Ensure all communications, including client email correspondence, are properly imaged into the entry file using SSD technology.
  • Support team goals and department objectives by contributing ideas that improve customs operations.
  • Provide backup help at reception, including answering incoming phone calls.
  • Promote clear communication and strong teamwork through positive working relationships.
  • Respond to emails outside regular business hours and route them appropriately.
  • Work independently and meet daily productivity expectations.
  • Help maintain a safe workplace by following all safety rules, practices, and procedures.
  • Report unsafe situations or activities to management and/or Human Resources.
  • Offer backup coverage, support, and training to the Moncton customs office and other regional offices as needed during absences, vacations, or other coverage needs.
  • Perform other job-related or consulting tasks assigned by management.

Experience and skills required

The position calls for prior customs-related experience or an equivalent background, typically two to four years of relevant experience and/or training, or a comparable mix of education and experience. Candidates should be able to read and interpret instructions, short correspondence, and memos, present information clearly to individuals or small groups, and perform basic calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, ratios, percentages, and graphs. Strong computer skills are also needed, including email, records management, databases, word processing, spreadsheets, and graphics.

Compensation

Salary starts at CAD 45,000 and can go up to CAD 55,000 per year, with room for growth and advancement based on performance and contribution.
