About the Company
Max AI is building a fully autonomous medical billing AI agent designed to operate without human intervention. The company is focused on transforming revenue cycle management in healthcare, starting with dermatology and expanding into additional specialties. The opportunity sits in a very large market, estimated at $350B per year.
The team combines deep expertise across medicine, AI research, and engineering. The founding physician has extensive product success and firsthand billing experience, the Head of AI has over a decade of research experience at MIT and Caltech, and the Head of Engineering was among the earliest engineers at Figma.
Role Overview
As an AI Engineer, you will help build and improve AI agents and machine learning systems for medical coding, billing accuracy, and broader revenue cycle workflows. You will also help create the internal AI infrastructure that supports these systems.
Responsibilities
- Develop, test, and assess AI agents and machine learning models in NLP to improve medical coding, billing accuracy, and related revenue cycle management tasks.
- Help design and maintain internal AI frameworks that support the development of the company’s agents and models.
- Work closely with a compact, high-impact team and interact directly with the operations team and customers to drive product improvements.

Requirements
- At least 6 years of professional experience in machine learning, AI, or data science in a production environment.
- Strong working knowledge of Python ML/NLP libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, and Transformers, including tools used with Hugging Face models.
- Deep expertise in AI/ML, especially NLP techniques such as preprocessing, embeddings, and transformer-based architectures.
- Hands-on experience with large language models, including supervised fine-tuning, use of AI frameworks, and LLM evaluation methods.
- Preferred: prior experience at a high-growth startup.
- Preferred: exposure to highly regulated industries or healthcare.
- Preferred: experience working with AWS.
Compensation and Benefits
The role offers a salary range of USD 150,000 to 250,000 per year, along with equity.
Platinum healthcare coverage is included: Medical (Platinum PPO) is covered at 100% for the employee and 80% for dependents; Dental (Platinum PPO) is covered at 90% for the employee and 75% for dependents; Vision (Platinum PPO) is covered at 90% for the employee and 75% for dependents.
Additional perks include a monthly allowance of $250 for gym memberships, classes, and similar wellness expenses, plus $2,000 annually for courses, mentorship, and related development opportunities.
