Role overview
Bettermile is looking for a working student frontend engineer to contribute to a modern product team focused on logistics planning and AI-driven decision-making. This is a fixed-term position for 12 months, with the option to extend it if both sides agree.
About the team and company
You will join the Better Planner tribe, a fast-moving and collaborative group building Bettermile’s newest product. Better Planner is designed to improve how logistics operations plan, predict, and execute by turning complex operational data into automated, precise decisions. The wider company develops geo-based, AI-powered SaaS solutions for address processing, dynamic routing, and navigation, with the goal of improving last-mile delivery.
What the work environment is like
- Supportive, appreciative, and structured around autonomy with a flat hierarchy.
- Strong room for professional development and early ownership.
- A diverse workplace with 29 languages, 32 nationalities, and 42% female representation.
- Hybrid setup with weekly in-person team days to strengthen collaboration and relationships.
- When on site, you will work from a modern Better Space in Berlin-Kreuzberg that is suitable for kids and pets.
- Remote work from anywhere is possible for up to 12 weeks per year.
- 27 vacation days based on a 5-day work week.
- Regular team breakfasts, fitness and wellness classes, company runs, and other social events.
- Fruits, snacks, drinks, and coffee with different milk options are available.
- High flexibility and a strong team culture.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will do meaningful frontend work rather than only small supporting tasks. You will contribute to real product development with guidance from experienced engineers.
- Build reusable, clean UI components as part of an ongoing design system migration.
- Develop frontend features from the ground up with support and mentorship from senior engineers.
- Contribute to the evolution of the team’s AI framework through hands-on development.
- Carry out technical research and investigations to evaluate tools, test approaches, and remove performance blockers.
- Improve user experience by debugging, refactoring, and solving clearly scoped frontend issues.
Requirements
Bettermile expects applicants to still be studying, so the team is looking for potential, curiosity, and a solid technical base rather than full professional expertise.
- Good knowledge of HTML and CSS, including the ability to structure web pages cleanly.
- Comfort with JavaScript or TypeScript and modern JavaScript concepts.
- Basic familiarity with a modern frontend framework such as React or Vue, gained through personal or university projects is fine.
- A resourceful approach to debugging and problem-solving, with the ability to timebox efforts and ask for help at the right moment.
- Clear and proactive communication, including keeping teammates updated and asking questions early.
- Genuine curiosity about technology beyond coursework, including reading, experimenting, or building side projects.
- Authorization to work in Germany or an existing Job Seeker Visa is required.
Good to have
- Experience using AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot or Claude Code to improve productivity, debug faster, and learn more quickly.
Additional information
This position is offered as a fixed-term contract of 12 months and may be extended if both parties agree. Bettermile emphasizes quick decision-making, collaborative working, and a learning-oriented culture where responsibility comes early but support is always available.
