About the company
Relevance AI is creating the operating layer for an AI-powered workforce. The company’s platform helps teams assign meaningful work to AI agents that can reason, take action, and work together like specialists. Customers use the product to build and manage intelligent agents that run workflows, make decisions, and collaborate through a single system.
The platform is already used by well-known organisations including Canva, Databricks, Confluent, Autodesk, Lightspeed, Rakuten, Aveva, Qualified, and Activision Blizzard. Relevance AI is supported by Bessemer Venture Partners, Insight Partners, Peak XV, and King River Capital, and completed its Series B in April 2025 to speed up expansion and advance agentic automation. The business is headquartered in San Francisco and Sydney and works in a hybrid setup built around curiosity, teamwork, and execution.
In 2025, the company was recognised as LinkedIn’s #1 Startup in Australia.
Role overview
This opening is for Staff Software Engineers with full-stack or back-end expertise to join core engineering teams in Sydney. Depending on the team, you may contribute to the agent and tool-building experience, the real-time conversational layer, or enterprise platform capabilities designed for the company’s largest customers.
The work centres on building systems that make AI practical, dependable, and ready for production use. The role suits someone who enjoys tackling difficult technical problems, shaping scalable architectures, and taking ownership of major projects from concept through delivery in close partnership with product and customer-facing teams.
The position offers strong autonomy and high trust, with the chance to ship quickly, drive important work end-to-end, and influence how engineering operates as the company scales.
Key responsibilities
- Design and build sophisticated production systems that power the platform at scale.
- Offer architectural direction and cross-team technical leadership to improve consistency, resilience, and long-term maintainability.
- Take ownership of major platform areas from system design through deployment, monitoring, and ongoing improvement.
- Work with product, go-to-market, and engineering leaders to turn customer and business needs into practical technical plans.
- Coach and support engineers across teams, helping raise technical standards and ownership.
- Contribute to engineering practices, processes, and standards as the organisation expands.
Technical environment
The current stack includes React, Vue.js, and TypeScript on the front end; Express.js, Node.js, and TypeScript on the back end; PostgreSQL and MongoDB for data storage; and AWS, Vercel, Terraform, and Kubernetes for infrastructure. The team also uses AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and similar tools.
What the company is looking for
- At least 6 years of practical software engineering experience, ideally in fast-moving, high-growth, and technically complex environments.
- Evidence of operating at Staff level, including architecture ownership, team mentoring, and influence over technical direction across multiple squads or projects.
- Strong grounding in cloud infrastructure and APIs, with preference for AWS, Node.js, and REST or GraphQL.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders and convert complex needs into executable plans.
- Proven experience handling ambiguous, complex problems end-to-end while delivering strong outcomes.
- A product mindset with attention to reliability, scalability, and the real-world impact of technical choices on users.
- Genuine interest in AI and enthusiasm for building standout products in this space.
- Regular use of AI-assisted coding tools and awareness of current developments in the field.
Bonus experience
- Building AI functionality using LLMs, agent workflows, or AI infrastructure.
- Creating enterprise-grade capabilities such as IAM, SSO, audit logging, compliance tooling, or observability systems.
- Developing integration ecosystems or native third-party connectors.
- Contributing to open-source software.
Why join
- Help build at the leading edge of AI with a small, ambitious team that values bold ideas.
- Work in a culture shaped by truth-seeking, optimism, empathy, customer focus, rapid iteration, and memorable experiences.
- Join a high-trust, low-ego environment that rewards exceptional work with competitive pay, equity, strong growth opportunities, and meaningful career impact.
- Be part of a well-funded company supported by major investors.
- As an early team member, you will help shape the company’s future, including its culture, operating style, and benefits.
Benefits
- Employee stock ownership through ESOP.
- AI Productivity Benefit worth up to USD 1,200 per year for AI tools, courses, and learning resources.
- 12 weeks of paid parental leave for all eligible new parents, plus an extra 6 weeks for the birthing parent.
- Milestone merchandise to celebrate work anniversaries.
- Free breakfasts, healthy snacks, stocked drinks, Tuesday/Thursday/Friday team lunches, Uber Eats dinners, and regular catered office meals.
- Community events with thought leaders, industry partners, and the wider tech community.
- Quarterly team events to strengthen connections.
- Social clubs for shared hobbies and interests.
- 24/7 wellbeing and mental health support through Sonder EAP.
