Role overview
The Institute of Eye Surgery is hiring a driven, clinically focused Optometrist to join its advanced eye care team in Cork. This role is designed for someone who wants to work in a highly clinical environment where patient care, specialist collaboration, and professional development are central to the job.
This is a non-sales setting with an emphasis on using and expanding your clinical expertise. You will work with senior ophthalmic specialists on complex cases and develop experience across a broader scope of optometric practice.
Location
The position is based at the Cork clinic in Cork, County Cork, Ireland. Cork is described as a fast-growing city with a strong healthcare sector, convenient transport connections, a lively city centre, and access to scenic coastal and countryside areas. It is presented as a good place for professionals relocating locally or internationally.
Key duties
The Optometrist will provide clinical care across several specialist pathways and contribute to the smooth running and continuous improvement of the clinic.
- Perform detailed eye examinations for patients on cataract, glaucoma, medical retina, vitreo-retinal, and casualty pathways.
- Use advanced diagnostic equipment such as OCT, Optos, visual fields, topography, pachymetry, and biometry as part of patient assessment.
- Work closely with ophthalmologists and clinical optometrists to agree and deliver the most suitable treatment or management plan.
- Support clinic flow, assist with cataract surgery listing, and help refine clinical procedures and protocols.
- Contribute to multidisciplinary teamwork aimed at improving patient care and service delivery.
- Take part in stock control, support the adoption of new technologies, and engage in CPD activities.
- Be available for occasional travel to other clinics as needed.
What makes this opportunity different
This role offers broad exposure to complex eye conditions and treatments, creating strong opportunities for learning and fast-paced professional growth. It is suited to optometrists who want to move beyond routine core practice.
The employer states that career progression is actively supported, with opportunities shaped by your interests and ambitions. There may be pathways into research, specialist clinics, or leadership roles over time.
The organisation also describes itself as open to new ideas and improvements. Suggestions for patient-facing services and enhancements to current processes are encouraged and considered.
Work-life balance is highlighted as a benefit, with either a standard Monday to Friday schedule or a flexible four-day week totalling 40 hours. Weekend work and attendance at organisational events are only occasional.
The team is described as supportive and welcoming to applicants at different stages of their career, including early-career optometrists, provided they have the right attitude and willingness to learn.

The ideal applicant will be patient-focused, committed to strong clinical care, and comfortable working in a multidisciplinary environment. A proactive mindset and interest in ongoing learning are important.
- Patient-centred approach with a strong commitment to excellent clinical standards.
- Good communication skills and a willingness to collaborate across clinical teams.
- Proactive attitude with interest in professional development and continuous learning.
