Job purpose
This role is central to keeping kitchen operations running efficiently. As a Kitchen Porter, you will help maintain spotless, sanitised and well-organised kitchen, wash-up and preparation areas, while supporting the culinary team and contributing to an excellent guest experience. The position also plays an important part in meeting health, safety and food hygiene standards, as well as the hotel’s sustainability and waste-reduction efforts.
Core responsibilities
- Keep kitchen, wash-up and food preparation areas clean and orderly throughout the shift, removing used crockery, utensils and equipment without delay.
- Use dishwashing machines safely and efficiently so items are washed, sanitised, dried and put away correctly.
- Carry out daily and weekly cleaning plans to the company’s safety and hygiene standards, including more intensive deep-cleaning tasks.
- Take care when handling kitchen equipment and report any faults, damage or maintenance concerns to supervisors to help reduce downtime.
- Act quickly to clean up breakages, spills and other hazards to maintain a safe environment.
- Manage waste responsibly by separating recycling and food waste according to hotel sustainability procedures.
- Help with stock rotation and receiving/storage of deliveries when needed, following food safety requirements.
- At the end of each service, clean cutlery trays, waste bins, dishwasher filters and sinks to avoid cross-contamination.
- Complete a full end-of-shift clean of the dishwasher, including draining it, cleaning filters and tidying the surrounding floor area.
- Follow all workplace safety practices, including PPE, chemical handling, COSHH procedures and emergency response instructions.
- Look after the staff canteen area by clearing away food and service items after meal times, wiping tables and counters, and resetting the space for the next use.
- Ensure the canteen remains clean and compliant with health, safety and hygiene expectations.
- Be flexible to work across scheduled rota shifts from Monday to Sunday, including public holidays.
- Adapt to cover staffing gaps and changing business needs to support continuous operations.
- Complete additional duties as requested by management.
Working pattern
This is a rota-based role covering seven days a week, including bank holidays, and requires flexibility to respond to operational requirements and staffing shortages.
Health, safety and hygiene
The role requires strict adherence to all relevant safety, hygiene and food-handling procedures, including safe use of cleaning chemicals, PPE compliance and emergency protocols.
Sustainability
You will support the property’s waste-reduction approach by sorting recycling and food waste correctly and helping maintain environmentally responsible kitchen practices.
Staff canteen duties
In addition to kitchen support, you will be responsible for keeping the staff canteen tidy and ready for service by clearing items, cleaning surfaces and restoring the area after meal periods.
