Role overview

ARO is hiring an experienced IT Operations Engineer to join its Internal IT function. The role is based in Liverpool, Cardiff or Farnborough and follows a hybrid setup, with three days a week in the office and occasional travel to other UK sites. Applicants need to be able to commute to the office and have their own transport. The position is permanent and offers a salary of up to £40,000.

This role suits a broad IT professional who enjoys diagnosing difficult issues, supporting colleagues directly, and improving the day-to-day performance of internal technology services. You will work across Microsoft 365, Azure, identity and access management, networking, infrastructure, security tools, endpoints and core business applications, acting as a dependable technical point of escalation.

The focus is on ARO’s internal users, devices and systems within an MSP-style environment, rather than external customer support delivery. You will help keep services secure, dependable and ready for future growth by resolving incidents, documenting solutions, collaborating with stakeholders and driving practical improvements.

Key responsibilities

You will handle a varied portfolio of internal IT issues and requests, including cases that need deeper investigation beyond first-line triage. The job involves supporting Microsoft 365, Windows endpoints, identity platforms, networking, security tooling, infrastructure and business applications, while maintaining clear ownership of tickets from start to finish or until appropriately escalated.

You will also provide support for Windows 11, Microsoft 365 Apps, Microsoft Teams, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and OneDrive; manage users, groups, permissions and access controls in Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID; and assist with joiner, mover and leaver processes. In addition, you will help with endpoint build, deployment, configuration and compliance using Microsoft Intune and related tools.

Further duties include investigating connectivity and network problems involving DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, routing, VLANs, Wi-Fi and VPN; supporting Windows Server 2022/2025, virtualised environments, monitoring, backups and recovery; and working with Microsoft Defender, Microsoft Purview, conditional access and endpoint protection to maintain a secure environment. You will also use ITSM processes to manage work, record activity, communicate progress and contribute to continuous service improvement, while partnering with internal application owners, IT colleagues and third-party suppliers to resolve incidents and implement change.

A key part of the role is spotting repeat issues, recommending improvements and helping create a more resilient, scalable and user-friendly internal IT platform. You will be expected to support ARO’s security commitments and operate in line with ISO 27001-aligned practices and sound security principles.

Requirements

The company is seeking someone with solid experience in IT support, infrastructure, operations or service desk work, particularly where you have resolved more complex technical issues rather than only completing basic triage. You should have broad exposure to endpoints, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Azure, identity and access management, networking, infrastructure, backup, security tools and business applications.

Hands-on experience with Windows 11, Microsoft 365 Apps, Microsoft Teams, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and OneDrive is required, along with practical administration of Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID, including users, groups, permissions, MFA and conditional access or equivalent controls. You should also understand endpoint management and device compliance, ideally through Microsoft Intune.

Strong networking troubleshooting skills are essential, including DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, routing, VLANs, Wi-Fi and VPN. The role also calls for experience supporting Windows Server environments, ideally Windows Server 2022 or Windows Server 2025, plus virtualisation and core infrastructure services. Good analytical ability, clear communication, strong customer service and stakeholder skills, the ability to prioritise competing work, and willingness to travel occasionally across the UK are also important.

Useful additional experience includes Microsoft Defender, Microsoft Purview, ServiceNow, Datto RMM, Veeam, Hyper-V, WatchGuard, Ubiquiti UniFi, Meraki or similar enterprise tools. Knowledge of Microsoft licensing, endpoint security baselines, patching, vulnerability management and IT asset management is welcomed, as is experience in an ITIL-aligned environment and relevant Microsoft, CompTIA, ITIL or equivalent certifications.

Benefits

ARO describes itself as a long-established technology business with 25 years of experience across Collaboration, Connectivity, Cloud and Infrastructure, and Cyber Security in the UK and internationally. The company says its culture is built around strong communication, trust, collaboration, fun and a modern workplace where people are encouraged to thrive.

Employees are offered a range of benefits, including a company pension scheme with matching contributions, access to a company perks portal, private medical insurance, life assurance, 25 days’ holiday plus bank holidays plus holiday trading, a paid birthday off, a health club and wellbeing scheme, ARO shares after 12 months of employment, an employee assistance programme, technical training academy and e-learning, and hybrid working.

ARO also notes that if around 80% of the role matches your experience and attributes, they would still like to hear from you.
