Role Overview

As a Data Center Technician at Microsoft, you’ll support the setup and deployment of hardware, carry out troubleshooting and diagnostics, and handle basic hardware removals for refreshes or straightforward changes by following established operating procedures. The role is designed to strengthen your understanding of data center processes, build mentoring ability, and expand your knowledge of security and data handling practices while supporting your career progression.

Within Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) organization, you’ll help power the infrastructure behind services such as Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Microsoft Azure. CO+I also emphasizes employee development through programs such as career rotations, diversity and inclusion learning, and professional certification opportunities.

Microsoft operates a global infrastructure network spanning more than 200 data centers across 32 countries, supported by millions of servers and teams of specialists serving over 1 billion customers and 20 million businesses in more than 90 countries. The company places sustainability and operational efficiency at the center of its data center strategy as it continues to expand and adapt to changing business needs.

Microsoft’s mission is to help every person and every organization achieve more. The workplace culture is built around growth, innovation, collaboration, respect, integrity, accountability, and inclusion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Run diagnostics and fix issues by following established procedures, identifying root causes quickly, and replacing defective parts while keeping disruption to customers and the business as low as possible.
  • Carry out post-work checks and confirm that grounding, staging, labeling, and cabling are completed correctly in line with safety requirements, deployment standards, and planned network design tasks.
  • Remove hardware for simple updates or refreshes, such as memory changes or rebuilds, using standard methods and limited supervision.
  • Record, communicate, and escalate incidents to the relevant data center operations teams, technician leads, or engineering specialists as needed.
  • Support fellow technicians on difficult or complex assignments and help them complete tasks effectively.
  • Finish role-related training, observe experienced technicians, and build hands-on knowledge through on-the-job learning.
  • Help maintain a positive team culture by sharing updates, participating in meetings, asking questions, and staying informed about team progress.
  • Take ownership of service quality, task completeness, user experience, and the condition of data center facilities.
  • Reflect Microsoft’s culture and values in day-to-day work.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or an equivalent qualification.
  • Basic familiarity with computer hardware and components.
  • Experience supporting IT equipment or similar technology.
