About the role
James Cook University is seeking a Workplace Health and Safety Support Officer to help maintain a safe campus environment and support compliance with fire safety and emergency preparedness requirements. This is a continuing full-time position based at the Townsville Bebegu Yumba campus in Douglas, offering 36.25 hours per week.
The position is classified at HEWL 5, with a salary range of $78,740 to $89,310 per year, along with up to 17% employer superannuation contributions, leave loading, and other employee benefits.
What you will do
In this role, you will work with colleagues across the university to support compliance with Building Fire Safety Regulations and help maintain a safe environment for staff and students.
- Support the university’s compliance with building fire safety requirements.
- Work with staff and students to promote safety across the campus.
- Plan, coordinate, and carry out building evacuation drills.
- Help prepare and maintain emergency evacuation plans.
- Keep relevant safety and emergency response databases up to date.
- Oversee first aid kits and other emergency equipment.
What you will bring
The ideal candidate will have relevant fire safety and workplace safety experience, along with strong communication, organisation, and problem-solving skills.
- Fire Safety Advisor qualifications, plus relevant experience in a Fire Safety Advisor position, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Practical knowledge of how to interpret and apply Building Fire Safety Regulations.
- Experience running evacuation drills in large, complex, or remote/isolated settings.
- Experience administering a First Aid Management Plan, including training, kit maintenance, and management of emergency equipment such as showers, eyewash stations, and defibrillators.
- Strong analytical ability and the confidence to manage changing priorities, both independently and as part of a team.
- Well-developed written and verbal communication skills for working with people from a wide range of backgrounds, both inside and outside the organisation.
- Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships.
- Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety is desirable.
