Role overview
This role sits within Remote Traffic Operations, the group that keeps ESPN and ABC remote productions connected through transmission, telecom, and internet services. The team coordinates fiber, satellite, IP, phone, internet, Ethernet, and return paths so live event audio and video can move reliably between the venue, Bristol, and other facilities. It also handles vendor coordination, temporary service setup, budgeting, and invoice coding for remote events.
Position summary
The Remote Encoding Technician is responsible for running onsite transmission and telecom services for ESPN remote productions. The work includes supporting high- and low-bandwidth fiber transport, voice and data circuits, encryption, compression, and related telecom systems. The role is focused on large, complex events and requires hands-on onsite support.
Key responsibilities
- Oversee transmission and telecom support for ESPN remote events of different sizes and complexity.
- Coordinate technical and operational planning for assigned programs and events with Remote Traffic, Transmission, Remote Operations, other internal teams, and external vendors.
- Review work orders, distribute event service details to the right stakeholders, and ensure information is shared before and throughout the production.
- Provide onsite transmission support at remote sports venues.
- Provide onsite telecommunications support at remote sports venues.
- Participate in site surveys and contribute to venue assessments and pre-event written plans.
- Maintain a strong working knowledge of telecom services, equipment, and operational procedures needed to support the department.
- Confirm that transport-service and equipment vendors meet ESPN’s technical and operational expectations.
- Take on special assignments as needed.
- Be available for travel and onsite support during evenings and weekends.
Qualifications
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational abilities.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven setting.
- At least 5 years of professional experience in broadcast or technical operations, including onsite work with remote transport and transmission systems.
- Experience with remote production workflows and remote transport systems.
- Solid understanding of production workflows and operating systems.
- Strong knowledge of telecom services.
- Experience handling and implementing multiple budgets.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification is preferred.
Additional information
This position requires lifting more than 50 lbs and working nights, holidays, and weekends. The hiring range for this remote role is $55 to $80 per hour, depending on geography, internal equity, job-related skills, knowledge, and experience.
