Role overview
Cogent Strategies is hiring a Public Relations Associate in Washington, D.C. This is a full-time, in-office opportunity for someone eager to work at the crossroads of government relations, public affairs, and communications. The role supports a range of clients spanning multiple industries and policy topics.
Key responsibilities
- Back client teams through research, issue monitoring, and content development such as press releases, policy summaries, and social media copy.
- Translate technical or complex policy matters into clear, audience-focused messaging and storylines.
- Follow federal policy updates, regulatory shifts, and media coverage relevant to client interests.
- Help plan and deliver integrated advocacy and communications initiatives.
- Coordinate the setup and logistics for client meetings, events, and coalition work.
- Support both digital and traditional media efforts, including writing content and assisting with outreach to media contacts.
- Provide project coordination support so deliverables are accurate and completed on time.
- Assist in building and maintaining relationships with reporters, stakeholders, and influential contacts.
Requirements
- One to three years of professional experience in a communications agency, on Capitol Hill, or within an Administration.
- Strong writing, editing, and research capabilities, along with solid knowledge of AP Style.
- Working understanding of communications channels including digital, print, social, and broadcast media.
- Good organizational skills and the ability to manage projects effectively.
- Comfort communicating with executives, clients, and internal team members.
- Self-driven, collaborative, and able to perform well in a busy, fast-moving environment.
- Interest in public affairs and policy-related work.
