Role Overview

The PT/ED Production Jr. Technician will lead safe, stable, and efficient pretreatment and electrodeposition operations in the automotive paint shop. The role is focused on maintaining body quality, corrosion resistance, and production flow by overseeing daily operations, equipment readiness, process discipline, and team coordination. The position is responsible for meeting QCDSM targets, following EHS requirements, and ensuring compliance with OEM paint process standards. As the primary on-shift leader for operators and technicians, this person will also drive problem-solving, continuous improvement, and strong operational control across PT/ED activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct day-to-day PT/ED production work to meet planned output, takt time, and shift objectives.
  • Track and manage critical process settings across pretreatment steps such as degreasing, rinsing, activation, phosphating, and passivation, as well as ED bath conditions including solids percentage, pH, conductivity, and temperature.
  • Oversee ultrafiltration, permeate quality, and anolyte control, while making sure SOPs, control plans, and work instructions are strictly followed.
  • Coordinate start-ups, shutdowns, changeovers, and recovery activities after stoppages.
  • Verify corrosion protection performance against OEM expectations and internal performance indicators.
  • Identify and respond to coating and surface defects such as poor phosphate coverage, ED defects, craters, pinholes, and low film build.
  • Perform PT/ED checks and review inspection outcomes.
  • Lead root cause investigations using structured methods such as 5-Why and Fishbone analysis, then implement corrective measures.
  • Assist with audits, capability studies, and customer quality requirements.
  • Ensure strict compliance with safety procedures, chemical handling rules, and lockout/tagout practices.
  • Confirm correct PPE usage and safe operation of conveyors, tanks, rectifiers, and lifting equipment.
  • Conduct daily toolbox talks and promote incident prevention activities.
  • Support environmental compliance in areas such as wastewater treatment, chemical storage, spill prevention, and emissions control.
  • Supervise, guide, and motivate operators and technicians working on the PT/ED line.
  • Manage shift handovers, task assignment, and manpower balancing.
  • Work with maintenance teams on preventive and corrective maintenance needs.
  • Contribute to Lean Manufacturing, TPM, and Kaizen initiatives.

Skills and Competencies

The role calls for solid hands-on knowledge of automotive pretreatment and cathodic electrodeposition, along with a clear understanding of corrosion protection and coating thickness control. Strong reading and interpretation skills for control charts, quality reports, technical manuals, SOPs, and process specifications are important. The technician should also be comfortable with chemical dosing systems, rectifiers, UF systems, wastewater treatment basics, shop-floor leadership, communication, decision-making, and problem-solving. Basic computer literacy in ERP systems, production reporting, and MS Office is also required, along with a practical, improvement-focused mindset.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A diploma or an equivalent technical qualification is required.
  • At least 2 to 3 years of experience in PT/ED processes is needed.
  • Previous exposure to supervisory or team-lead responsibilities is preferred.
  • Understanding of OEM automotive quality expectations and EHS requirements is expected.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts and support production as per plant schedules is necessary.
