Descrição da vaga
Role overview
HMP Grendon and HMP Springhill are looking for an Operational Support Grade (OSG) to help with the everyday running of a busy prison. This is a practical, varied role where you will support security, movement, administration and visitor management as part of a collaborative team.
What the role involves
Your work may include gate security and searches, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, checking phone calls and CCTV, and assisting with escorts across the prison estate. The job combines desk-based duties with active, physical tasks such as lifting, carrying and walking to escort vehicles.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. The ideal candidate will communicate well, stay composed in pressured situations, use sound judgement and common sense, and work effectively as part of a team in a fast-moving environment.
Working pattern
This position involves a range of shifts, including nights and weekends, to support continuous prison operations. At HMP Grendon and HMP Springhill, driving is an essential part of the role, so applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence.
Career value
This role offers a chance to contribute to public safety and support important rehabilitation work within the prison system. While prisoner contact is limited, there may be occasional interaction depending on the establishment. The position also provides strong insight into prison operations and can open pathways to other prison careers, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this position is £29,432. Alongside base pay, you will receive training and development opportunities, plus a benefits package that includes annual leave, public holidays, apprenticeship access, pension support and a range of staff discounts and wellbeing schemes.
Additional information
- Annual leave starts at 25 days on appointment and rises to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated on a pro-rata basis.
- You will also receive 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays.
- There is access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
- Additional support includes the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme and a Cycle to Work scheme.
