Athens Orthopedic Clinic is a long-established private orthopedic practice in North Georgia, backed by 60 years of clinical service. In addition to patient care, it has a strong educational and research focus, having hosted over 150 medical students over the last decade and supported a variety of clinical research initiatives aimed at innovation and continuous quality improvement.
Role Overview
The Orderly plays an important support role within the surgery center by helping keep the environment safe, clean, and well organized. This position assists with moving patients, turning over rooms, setting up and breaking down equipment, and handling other non-clinical tasks that help surgical operations run efficiently. The role also involves managing supply orders and receipts, keeping inventory at the right level, and working closely with clinical personnel to support patient safety and smooth perioperative flow.
Key Responsibilities
- Keep the sterile processing area clean and organized, including work surfaces, shelving, and equipment.
- Maintain a professional, composed, and orderly approach throughout the workday.
- Support room cleaning and turnover in operating and procedure rooms between cases.
- Help preserve a neat workplace by clearing trash, reducing clutter, and dusting counters and shelves.
- Remove used linen each day and place clean linen in the proper areas.
- Clean scrub sinks and replenish handwashing products and personal protective equipment.
- Inspect sharps containers and empty them when required.
- Prepare and turn in weekly housekeeping checklists.
- Assist with patient movement and transport patients safely on stretchers and wheelchairs following safety procedures.
- Apply practical knowledge of vendors and sources for supplies, equipment, and materials.
- Keep files, records, vendor catalogs, and sales representative contact details up to date.
- Watch inventory levels to avoid shortages or excess stock and ensure supplies are distributed on time.
- Review surgical schedules to anticipate supply needs and reduce the risk of delays.
- Work with the Director of Nursing and Administrator on special procedure requirements.
- Track back orders, warranties, and preventive maintenance agreements.
- Maintain accurate records for linen usage and biohazard waste handling.
- Carry out other related duties as assigned.
Reporting Structure
This position reports directly to the Clinical Director and has no direct reports.
Education and Experience
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Candidates should bring at least 2 years of orderly experience, ideally in an ambulatory surgery center setting. Materials management experience is preferred. A suitable combination of education and experience may also be considered. Strong knowledge of medical terminology is required.
Skills and Competencies
The ideal candidate should be able to build effective working relationships, collaborate well with others, and seek input when accuracy matters. Strong organization, prioritization, and multitasking ability are important in this fast-paced environment, along with sound analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. The role also requires independence, a polished professional presence, and the ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate clearly in English.
Physical Requirements
This job includes regular heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling of up to 50 pounds without assistance, including patient transfers. It also requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand use, standing, walking, squatting, and sitting. The position calls for good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to use a keyboard, medical equipment, fax machine, scanner, photocopier, and telephone. Adequate hearing and clear verbal communication are necessary for in-person and phone interactions. Visual ability must be sufficient for patient observation and reading printed and digital materials. There is also potential exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, medicinal products, and other clinic-related conditions.
