Role overview
This student position is based at Fort Henry National Historic Site of Canada, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you will help bring historic military life to visitors through guided interpretation, live performances, and precision drill demonstrations.
Work details
The role offers variable hours up to a maximum of 36.25 hours per week. You must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed. The assignment runs from May 4 to September 7, 2026.
Location: Fort Henry Guard, Fort Henry National Historic Site of Canada, Kingston, Ontario.
Pay rate: $18.45 per hour.
What you will do
- Represent one of Kingston’s best-known tourism attractions in a public-facing role.
- Portray a British soldier from 1867 British North America while wearing period costume.
- Share the history of Fort Henry National Historic Site of Canada with visitors through military drills, guided tours, historical reenactments, parades, events, and performances.
- Take part in daily drill-squad practice, including foot and arms drill, formation drill, firearms displays, artillery gun drill, and military etiquette.
- Keep uniforms, historic weapons, and related equipment clean, polished, and in good condition.
- Perform for visitors and support both internal and external special events.
- Help create a positive visitor experience by delivering strong customer service.
- Follow safe work practices at all times and report hazards or unsafe situations right away.
- Work in a way that reflects the organization’s equity, diversity, and inclusion values.
Required abilities
- Strong physical fitness to handle 19th-century British army foot and arms drill, including infantry and artillery routines, and to work outdoors in hot weather.
- Ability to learn and perform precise choreographed military drill within a short timeframe.
- Comfort working as part of a team in a fast-moving live performance setting.
- Ability to stay effective in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment with demanding performance standards.
- Capacity to quickly learn historical material, especially Canadian and/or British military and social history around 1867, and present it clearly to the public in both one-on-one and group settings.
- Skill in portraying a historical character while wearing historical costume in front of audiences.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills to support program delivery, customer service, and public information sharing.
- Ability to learn and follow all required safety procedures to protect yourself, guests, and coworkers.
Eligibility and screening
Applicants must be at least 17 years old, as required by the Explosives Regulatory Division. A vulnerable sector check is required for this role.
