What the job involves
The General Helper is expected to keep camp facilities clean, organized, and sanitary while supporting food service areas and maintaining stock levels. The role operates in a remote camp setting where staff live on site, receive meals and accommodation during their rotation, and work scheduled shifts followed by scheduled time off.
Remote camp working conditions
- Camp staff live at the site during their rotation, with meals and accommodation included.
- Typical rotation patterns may include 4 weeks on and 2 weeks off, 20 days on and 10 days off, 3 weeks on and 1 week off, or 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off, depending on the site.
- Workdays are generally 10 to 12 hours long and may be day or night shift.
- Overtime rates apply.
- Most camps provide private or shared staff accommodation, ensuite or shared bathrooms, full meals, Wi-Fi, and sometimes health or gym facilities.
- Partial uniforms are provided, and travel arrangements or reservations are supported as needed.
- The site is approximately 5 hours north of Terrace, British Columbia, and the team manages travel logistics for employees.
- Health and wellness benefits become available after 3 months.
- The workplace is alcohol- and drug-free.
- Some locations require pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
- All new employees must complete onboarding orientation before starting.
Responsibilities
- Prepare coffee service areas, replenish beverage coolers and snack displays, and restock napkins and condiments.
- Clean and keep organized the kitchen, coolers, freezers, and dry storage areas as instructed.
- Sweep and mop floors, and wipe down counters and tables.
- Wash dishes, pots, pans, and manage garbage removal.
- Alert the supervisor to any concerns involving food, safety, or equipment.
- Track inventory and maintain related records.
- Set up the dry breakfast line, lunch service, and snack station.
- Keep sandwich coolers, beverage coolers, condiments, napkins, and utensils sanitized and fully stocked.
- Portion, wrap, and prepare snacks according to the chef’s direction.
- Clean and sanitize dining tables and replenish supplies as needed.
- Ensure equipment is switched off, emptied, cleaned, and sanitized at the end of use.
- Continuously perform touch-up cleaning wherever additional attention is needed.
Requirements
- 1 to 2 years of experience in a general helper role.
- Ability to speak, read, and write in English.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to encourage, support, and work respectfully with others.
- Strong attention to detail and solid organizational ability.
- Capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Professional appearance and responsible conduct at all times.
- Commitment to safe work practices.
Physical requirements
- Must be able to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and crouch for extended periods.
- Requires fast, repetitive use of fingers, hands, and wrists.
- Must be able to lift, push, pull, or carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to handle tools and objects with hands.
- Must be capable of working shifts of up to 12 hours.
Pre-employment requirements
- Completion of LandSea and site-specific orientation, including health and safety training.
- Drug and alcohol clearance.
- Clear criminal record check.
- Job-related certifications, such as Foodsafe, if required.
- Completed health questionnaire.
- Valid government-issued identification for travel if needed.
- Two references from former employers.
