Freelance Chatbot Developer (WhatsApp / Telegram / Discord)

Role Overview

Mindrift is seeking experienced bot engineers to support the Tendem project and develop conversational solutions for platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Discord. This freelance, part-time remote role sits in a hybrid AI plus human workflow, where AI pilots work alongside Tendem Agents who take care of repetitive tasks while you contribute technical bot-building expertise, conversational design decisions, and quality review so the final bots are dependable and ready for real users.

The work is centered on building and improving messaging bots and integrations for practical use cases including customer support, appointment scheduling, order capture, content delivery, moderation, and automated alerts.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop bots for WhatsApp Business API/Cloud API, Telegram Bot API, Discord, and other similar messaging environments.
• Plan and implement conversation paths, state handling, and fallback logic.
• Connect bots with LLM services such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar tools when natural language generation is needed.
• Integrate bots with internal systems, databases, CRMs, and third-party services such as booking, payment, and content platforms.
• Manage webhooks, API rate restrictions, and platform-specific message formats including interactive messages, buttons, media, and templates.
• Review AI-generated bot code, improve it for accuracy, and strengthen error handling and reliability.
• Add logging, monitoring, and recovery mechanisms to keep bots stable in production.

Requirements

• At least 3 years of experience in backend development, automation, integration work, or bot development.
• At least 1 year of practical experience building bots for major messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, or similar.
• Strong programming ability in Python or Node.js for backend bot logic.
• Good working knowledge of REST APIs, webhooks, OAuth, and asynchronous request handling.
• Experience using relational or NoSQL databases to store conversation state and user information.
• Familiarity with LLM APIs such as OpenAI or Anthropic, along with prompt design for conversational systems, is an advantage.
• Understanding of platform constraints, template messaging, and approval processes, including WhatsApp template workflows.
• Experience deploying and hosting applications using Docker, serverless platforms, VPS, or PaaS environments.
• Excellent attention to detail and a strong focus on bot reliability, with no tolerance for silent failures or broken user flows.
• Ability to work independently, take ownership, and deliver complete bot solutions without close supervision.
• A portfolio or sample bots is required.
• English level of upper-intermediate (B2) or higher is required.
• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical area is considered an advantage.

Working Time and Compensation

During active project phases, the expected workload is approximately 10 to 20 hours per week. This is an estimate rather than a fixed commitment and applies only while the project is active.

Compensation can reach the equivalent of $60 per hour depending on experience and contribution pace. Pay may differ across projects depending on scope, complexity, and expertise required.
