Role overview
This position is responsible for leading the Environment, Health, and Safety function at the Kathua construction chemicals manufacturing site. The role is centered on maintaining full regulatory adherence, strengthening a preventive safety culture, and advancing chemical process safety, environmental performance, and employee well-being.
Regulatory compliance and statutory coordination
- Ensure the plant consistently follows requirements under the Factories Act, OSHA, and ISO 14001/45001 across all operations.
- Track changes in local and international EHS rules so compliance measures stay current and proactive.
- Act as the main point of contact for authorities during audits, inspections, and statutory submissions.
Operational safety and risk control
- Carry out detailed risk reviews, hazard identification exercises, and Job Safety Analysis for plant activities.
- Set up, apply, and monitor a strong Permit-to-Work process for hazardous and non-routine work.
- Lead incident investigations using root-cause analysis to identify failures and implement corrective measures.
Chemical process safety
- Create, roll out, and enforce SOPs for the safe handling, storage, movement, and disposal of hazardous chemicals.
- Keep Material Safety Data Sheets accessible, updated, and communicated effectively across all shifts.
- Oversee control of VOC emissions, effluent treatment operations, and emergency spill response readiness.
- Ensure secondary containment systems for chemical storage areas are in place and regularly reviewed.
- Audit chemical inventory practices and labeling compliance in line with global HazCom expectations.
Environmental management
- Monitor environmental indicators such as air quality, water discharge, and noise levels on an ongoing basis.
- Promote waste reduction, segregation, and recycling initiatives that support sustainability objectives.
- Ensure the Effluent Treatment Plant operates efficiently and stays compliant with applicable norms.
Training, culture, and emergency preparedness
- Develop and conduct safety induction sessions for new employees and refresher training for existing teams.
- Organize periodic mock drills for fire emergencies, chemical spills, and full-site evacuation scenarios.
- Help build a safety-first culture by encouraging participation in safety committees and near-miss reporting.
Reporting and performance tracking
- Maintain accurate, inspection-ready documentation for incidents, audits, inspections, and CAPA plans.
- Prepare monthly EHS dashboards for plant leadership review.
- Monitor key metrics such as LTIFR and near-miss trends to identify improvement opportunities.
Qualifications and experience
The ideal candidate should hold a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or Industrial Safety Management and bring 7 to 12 years of progressive EHS experience. Prior exposure to chemical, petrochemical, or construction chemicals manufacturing environments is strongly preferred. A good understanding of chemical process safety, hazardous materials handling, and environmental compliance is essential. NEBOSH or IOSH certification, or a Diploma in Industrial Safety, is highly desirable. Working knowledge of SAP, ERP systems, and MS Office is also expected, along with strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
