Role overview

This role is responsible for building prototype and small-batch printed circuit board assemblies, as well as supporting production-line builds, so engineering development and customer delivery timelines are met accurately and on schedule. The work also includes preventative and corrective maintenance on equipment, including board-level repair. The position operates with general supervision, but the incumbent is expected to make significant independent decisions.

Key duties

You will assemble prototype PCBs for research and development work and produce limited quantities of boards for manufacturing needs. You will also build products using the relevant text procedures and ensure outputs meet quality standards while matching or improving on assigned build and repair times.

Additional responsibilities include maintenance of equipment, on-site fault diagnosis, troubleshooting, repair work, and replacement of modular components. The role requires the ability to interpret detailed schematics, wiring and parts diagrams, work orders, customer specifications, test instructions, and engineering notes to decide which tests and tools are required.

You will evaluate subassemblies and assemblies, review test results against specifications, and use diagnostic equipment such as counters, signal generators, tracking generators, synthesizers, network analyzers, spectrum analysers, digital interface units, hand tools, and specialised tooling. The position also involves alerting the team leader quickly about production issues that may cause defects and recommending practical fixes.

Continuous improvement is part of the job, along with applying 5S practices across work areas. You will also assist the Quality Assurance team with calibration-related tasks for items not sent to external providers and keep original calibration certificates on file.

General responsibilities

The role requires compliance with Cubic’s quality management system, occupational health and safety policies, environmental procedures, HR procedures, and security requirements. You are expected to look after your own safety and the safety of others, report hazards, participate in safety initiatives, and complete any other duties assigned as business needs change.

Requirements

Applicants should hold NCEA or an equivalent qualification in electronics engineering, computer science, information systems, or another relevant technical discipline. A successful candidate will also bring 3 to 4 years of assembly experience, enough to meet or improve production timing targets.

Other essential capabilities include the ability to work from text procedures and engineering drawings, solder to IPC-A-610 Rev D Class 2, carry out wiring to IPC WHMA A 620 Rev A Class 2, and complete light mechanical assembly using practical hand skills. Basic computer skills are needed for product testing on automated test equipment.

Employment is subject to a successful National Police Check. Because occasional travel to New Zealand suppliers or overseas customer sites may be required, strong spoken and written English is necessary.
