Role overview

This position focuses on preventing loss and ensuring health and safety compliance. The role is centered on reducing risk, identifying threats early, and putting controls in place to lessen the impact of incidents that cannot be fully avoided.

Key responsibilities

You will support business compliance by strengthening store administration and ensuring that risk-related processes are properly implemented. The role also includes assessing the financial effect of losses on the business, employees, the public, and the environment, while balancing retention strategies with practical insurance solutions.

Additional duties include preparing risk and insurance budgets, allocating claim and premium costs across departments and divisions, and maintaining accurate records for insurance policies, claims, and loss history. You will also review major contracts, proposed facilities, and new initiatives to identify loss and insurance exposure.

Loss prevention, security, and shrinkage control

A major part of the role is to address stock loss, shrinkage, and security concerns. This includes ensuring that compliance standards are met, monitoring operational processes, and taking corrective action where gaps are found.

Compliance and legislative requirements

You will be expected to maintain full alignment with company policies, procedures, and applicable legislation. The role includes continuous coaching, identifying corrective actions with managers, reporting discrepancies, and recommending improvements. Where legislative training is needed, you will identify the requirement and alert HR and Learning & Development for follow-up.

Investigations

You will conduct investigations into criminal or suspicious activity within the store while following internal protocols and legal requirements. This includes preparing investigation reports, identifying business trends, using tools such as interviews and polygraph assessments where appropriate, and ensuring matters are followed through to closure. Regular coordination with the risk management, store operations, and legal teams is also part of the job.

Risk assessments

Quarterly risk reviews must be completed across stores and warehouses to spot exposure areas and apply corrective measures. The role involves recommending ways to prevent internal and external losses, including issues such as cash theft, stock rollovers, inventory control failures, equipment damage, access breaches, fraud, shoplifting, vandalism, counterfeiting, robbery, and store safety concerns.

Policies and procedures

You will help establish risk management policies and procedures and ensure all work is completed in a controlled, consistent manner. Compliance audits against operational procedures are also part of the position.

Requirements and competencies

The ideal candidate should have a BGCSE and relevant tertiary education in Administration, Finance, or a related field. Experience in store operations or a similar environment is important, along with 2 years of FMCG or retail experience, preferably, and 1 to 2 years of management experience. Advanced Microsoft Office knowledge is required, with strong Excel skills being essential. A valid driver’s licence and the ability to work independently are also needed.

Strong communication, analytical thinking, teamwork, resilience under pressure, attention to detail, planning, organization, and time management are important. The role also requires a willingness to learn, the ability to coach others, adaptability, a reliable work ethic, and the confidence to explain work-related matters clearly to colleagues.
