The Hardware group builds AI-first silicon and tightly coupled system solutions tailored to the demanding needs of advanced AI workloads. Drawing on work such as Jalapeño, the team is shaping future generations of AI-native silicon and integrated systems that support frontier models. Through close collaboration across chips, systems, tools, and methods, the team aims to deliver hardware that is faster, more efficient, and ready for production within OpenAI’s supercomputing platform.

About the role

OpenAI is seeking a Product Manufacturing Engineer to lead manufacturing-focused technical programs that help move products successfully from concept through launch and into high-volume production, with a strong emphasis on PCB and PCBA manufacturing and process development. This position partners closely with design engineering, operations, TPMs, suppliers, and external vendors to make sure products are delivered on schedule and meet the highest quality expectations.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. The team follows a hybrid arrangement of 3 days per week in the office and provides relocation support for new hires.

What you will do

• Drive manufacturing and quality programs that support product success from early concept through launch.
• Own product design and manufacturing execution for next-generation AI hardware systems while coordinating with design, operations, TPMs, and external partners to keep delivery on time and at a high quality bar.
• Lead the creation of NPI manufacturing processes, systems, and quality controls, including clear milestones, deliverables, and internal process improvements across functions.
• Provide practical manufacturing analysis throughout design, development, testing, prototyping, and production.
• Investigate automation approaches and create new test methods and systems to improve efficiency.
• Own manufacturing development for L6 through potentially L10 hardware products, covering PCB, PCBA, cabling, connectorization, and L10 assembly across internal and external development efforts through deployment and support of production workloads at scale.
• Define and track manufacturing requirements, scope, schedules, and deliverables with engineering teams, TPMs, suppliers, partners, and other stakeholders.
• Communicate clearly with cross-functional teams to help programs execute successfully.
• Use structured problem solving to address issues, assess and reduce risks, and manage change effectively.
• Handle several projects at once while keeping progress, deadlines, and quality standards on track.

• A creative, detail-focused, and self-driven approach, along with enthusiasm for working in a fast-moving technology environment.
• Up-to-date knowledge of PCB and PCBA manufacturing methods and industry trends.
• Experience working closely with cross-functional partners to evaluate design changes and fold validation needs into overall system builds.
• Experience driving schedules for new platform introductions and managing internal review processes.
• Deep experience balancing creativity, quality, and schedule with multinational JDMs, CMs, and suppliers.
• Working knowledge of PCB material choices, PCBA, BOM component selection, assembly, rework processes, and related equipment.
• Familiarity with the challenges of testing ultra-high-speed signals.
• Interest in collecting, analyzing, and presenting manufacturing test data.
• A proactive mindset toward corrective actions.
• Comfort working through ambiguity and rapidly changing priorities.
