Principal Advisor, Secondary Transitions

Role overview

This permanent position offers the chance to influence learner outcomes by improving the pathway from school into further study, training, and work. The role is regionally based and focuses on helping education leaders guide learners through NCEA transitions with an emphasis on fair and equitable outcomes. It also contributes to the delivery of Ka Hikitia and the Action Plan for Pacific Education.

What you will do

You will collaborate across the region with secondary schools, wharekura, tertiary providers, iwi, and community groups to support the implementation of NCEA changes. A key part of the work is developing practical approaches that strengthen achievement, improve retention in education, and help build productive partnerships with employers so young people can move into meaningful careers. The role also involves creating alternative responses for learners who are not engaged or who find mainstream settings difficult.

Working style and expectations

This position calls for an adaptable, flexible approach, along with experience in leading change and using data to inform decisions. You will need to balance relationship-building, regional insight, planning, and reporting while contributing to system improvement.

Pay and employment details

The salary range is NZD 119,171 to NZD 144,560 per year, plus KiwiSaver. Appointment will be based on the skills and experience the selected candidate brings. The role is permanent and full-time, based in Dunedin, New Zealand.

About the team

Te Mahau is a frontline group that supports the education sector through leadership, integrated services, learning support, education advice, and regulatory and network functions across kōhanga, schools, kura, and early learning services. The group works closely with communities at regional and local levels, including iwi and hapū, and strengthens connections with Māori, Pacific peoples, disabled ākonga, learners with additional support needs, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
