About the Role

School District No. 62 (Sooke) is hiring a permanent full-time Payroll Technician for its Payroll Services Unit, based at the School Board Office at 3143 Jacklin Road in Langford, near Victoria on southern Vancouver Island. This is a specialized and confidential position focused on the accurate, efficient, and timely coordination of multiple payrolls.

The district is one of the fastest-growing in British Columbia and serves communities including Langford, Colwood, Metchosin, Sooke, and the Highlands. It employs more than 2,300 educators and support staff and supports over 14,000 students. Its strategic direction is centered on learning, engagement, and growth.

You will partner with Human Resources and Finance to strengthen and modernize payroll processes while handling inquiries and requests from employees and both internal and external stakeholders.

Experience and Qualifications

Applicants should submit a cover letter and resume showing education and experience in the following areas:

  • Grade 12 plus Payroll Compliance Professional (PCP) certification, along with additional accounting or related coursework, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • At least 5 years of progressive payroll production experience, including work in a highly complex computerized environment within a unionized setting.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll reporting obligations, pension and benefit administration, payroll laws, regulations, acts, union agreements, and SD62 policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to build teams and work effectively in collaboration with others.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to judge the priority and urgency of correspondence, phone calls, and payroll/accounting deadlines with discretion.
  • A strong commitment to confidentiality in all job-related matters.
  • Significant experience with modern complex payroll/HRIS systems, including the ability to implement, develop, test, and support new functionality and upgrades.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office, especially Excel, and solid proficiency in a Windows-based environment.
  • Experience with Atrieve (PowerSchool) software will be considered an advantage.

Compensation and Benefits

The pay rate for this position is $35.13 per hour, which works out to $73,070 annually. The role is full-time at 40 hours per week, or 2,080 hours per year.
