Overview
The Facilities Technician is responsible for keeping the premises clean, orderly, and functioning well through both custodial work and basic building maintenance. The role covers routine housekeeping, minor repairs, and support for building systems and equipment. It also includes assisting with tasks that may overlap with unlicensed trades such as carpentry, painting, light equipment operation, and locksmith work.
Key Duties
- Carry out cleaning work such as mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, wiping, washing, polishing, and dusting floors, carpets, walls, windows, and doors.
- Remove rubbish and recyclables, and keep restrooms, stairways, offices, and other shared areas clean as needed.
- Check, maintain, and complete routine repairs on electrical fixtures and systems, including tubes, switches, photocells, and outlets, and support licensed electricians with non-technical tasks.
- Observe heating, ventilation, and cooling systems, perform simple component replacements, and handle non-technical upkeep such as cleaning fan coil units and adjusting system controls.
- Monitor plumbing systems and complete basic maintenance work such as fixing leaks, clearing blocked waste lines, installing water coolers, and making non-technical changes to plumbing and water supply systems while assisting licensed plumbers when needed.
- Perform carpentry and related maintenance work, including drywall or sheetrock installation and repair, window replacement, cabinet and countertop replacement, painting, texturing, and fitting doors and hardware.
- Assist with upkeep of the water treatment and storage system when required.
- Handle general maintenance, custodial duties, trash removal, and kitchen equipment repairs where necessary.
- Use equipment and supplies properly, encourage safe work practices, and support environmental responsibility and continuous improvement.
- Keep accurate records of maintenance work and document facility service needs.
- Look after tools and storage areas, maintain flowers and gardens, and care for facility carpets.
- Complete other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- A minimum of 3 years of direct experience in duties similar to those listed for the role.
- A diploma from an accredited institution that exceeds the minimum educational requirement.
- Practical trade expertise in at least one area such as electrical work, plumbing, HVAC, painting, drywall, or carpentry.
- Comfortable using computers, preferably in a Windows-based PC environment.
- Strong record-keeping and documentation ability.
- Ability to interpret and follow detailed instructions and procedures.
- Skilled in using hand tools and power tools relevant to the trade.
- Able to service and maintain appliances, heating units, and cooling equipment.
- Knowledgeable about safety procedures and able to follow and enforce them.
- Understanding of one or more building trades.
- Capable of planning and prioritizing work within a preventive maintenance program.
