CAD Designer (Highway Rail)

Role overview

Larsen & Toubro is looking for a CAD Designer to support highway and railway design work from its Greater Chennai Area location. The role focuses on producing precise alignment drawings, building design models, and assisting engineering teams with technical documentation and quantity-related outputs.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare detailed alignment drawings for highway and railway assignments, covering typical cross-sections, running cross-sections, longitudinal profiles, horizontal alignment plans, strip plans, and LWR/CWR plans for railway works.
• Create and update 2D and 3D design models using AutoCAD and Civil 3D, following the approved design criteria.
• Support design engineers with geometric design development, quantity calculations, and BOQ preparation.
• Handle and coordinate several design inputs such as survey data from total station and DGPS, LiDAR data where relevant, alignment geometry data, DTM and surface models, GIS base maps, utility information, point files, corridor models, and reference drawings.
• Ensure drawings meet the required standards and guidelines, including IRC and MoRTH requirements for highway projects, IRPWM, IRSOD, and RDSO guidelines for railway projects, along with client-specific specifications and internal QA/QC checks.
• Convert design calculations, alignment reports, and design notes into clear and accurate technical drawings.
• Work with teams across structures, drainage, utilities, traffic, signaling, and other disciplines to deliver fully coordinated and clash-free drawing sets.
• Participate in design reviews, audits, and approval cycles by addressing comments and keeping deliverables compliant.
• Keep up to date with newer AutoCAD features, templates, and automation tools.

Requirements

• Hands-on experience in preparing highway and railway CAD drawings and design models.
• Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
• Ability to interpret alignment data, survey inputs, terrain models, and related reference files.
• Good understanding of highway and railway design standards and project documentation practices.
• Experience coordinating with multiple engineering disciplines and maintaining quality compliance.
• Ability to translate engineering calculations and reports into accurate drafting outputs.
