Role overview
The Underwriting Assistant supports the retail branch underwriting function through clerical work and limited underwriting-related tasks. The position works under close supervision and helps Underwriters manage loan files and related documentation.
Key duties
- Support Underwriters by updating loan files, recording conditions, running Automated Underwriting System checks, and submitting items to PMI.
- Assess loan conditions, decide when an Underwriter needs to review them, and clear straightforward items when appropriate.
- Check credit, income, and asset documents to confirm they meet stated guidelines.
- Answer incoming calls and pass relevant updates to branch staff.
- Read routine emails and respond as needed.
- Prepare and route non-delegated loan packages to the correct agency or investor, such as PMI, USDA, Bond Agency, or Jumbo Investor.
- Request appraisal-related support when an Underwriter asks for it, including AVMs and desk reviews.
- Sort through and remove outdated files when required.
- Track office supplies and place replenishment orders when inventory runs low.
- Take on other assigned tasks as needed.
