About the School and Employer
The Aga Khan Education Service, Kenya runs five schools across Kenya, offering nursery through senior secondary education in both national and international programmes. The Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi is an IB continuum school authorized to deliver the International Baccalaureate from Early Years through PYP, MYP and DP. The school serves more than 1,000 students and brings together a multicultural community of learners and staff from many nationalities.
The Junior School at Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi is hiring a Teacher Librarian.
Role Overview
The Teacher Librarian will build and maintain an inclusive, vibrant library space that supports literacy, learning and student research. The role is focused on providing access to high-quality and varied resources that reinforce the IB curriculum while nurturing reading habits, inquiry skills and academic honesty. The position works closely with teaching staff to embed information literacy into classroom practice and to encourage lifelong learning.
Key Responsibilities
- Create, maintain and continually improve a well-structured, relevant and engaging library collection.
- Handle cataloguing, classification, stock checks and upkeep of library resources.
- Prepare and manage the library budget as well as purchase and acquisition plans.
- Deliver instruction in information literacy, research techniques and reading initiatives.
- Work with teachers to connect library materials with curriculum delivery.
- Promote academic integrity, respect for copyright and responsible use of sources.
- Drive student participation in reading activities and library-based programmes.
- Keep parents and students informed about library services and related matters.
- Support efficient day-to-day running of the library.
- Maintain clear records for library holdings and textbook distribution.
Requirements
- A degree in Library and Information Science together with a teaching qualification.
- At least 3 years of experience in teaching and/or managing a school library, preferably in an IB or international school environment.
- Valid Teachers Service Commission (TSC) registration certificate.
- Good command of current technology tools, including Microsoft Office packages.
- Strong understanding of information literacy, research methods and academic integrity.
- Demonstrated ability in cataloguing, classification and library management systems.
- Experience in collection development, budgeting and resource planning.
- Ability to design and deliver interactive and effective library lessons.
Additional Information
The role is in the Social Development sector, based in Kenya, within the Eastern Africa region.
