Role overview
Bison Transport Inc. is looking for a Payroll Specialist in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to handle accurate and on-time payroll processing for Canadian and U.S. employees. The position covers company drivers, owner operators, mechanics, and hourly office staff. You will take ownership of the full payroll cycle, ensure compliance with payroll rules, and help maintain payroll accuracy through checks, audits, and issue resolution.
What you will do
- Run complete payroll processing for company drivers across Canadian and U.S. operations, including multi-state U.S. payroll.
- Make sure pay is calculated according to pay scales, contracts, and offer letters, and that deductions and remittances are handled correctly and on time.
- Review weekly move numbers, correct errors, and settle miles or hours for the pay period before loading data into the payroll system.
- Confirm that orientation pay and miscellaneous earnings are captured correctly.
- Enter, check, and maintain miscellaneous deductions in the payroll software.
- Import employee earnings into the payroll system and investigate exception reports for missing miles or legs.
- Calculate vacation pay and process bonus payments.
- Prepare Records of Employment for terminated employees and complete employment verification requests.
- Respond to payroll questions from employees across both Canadian and U.S. payroll groups.
- Administer garnishments according to the rules that apply in each jurisdiction.
- Support year-end payroll activities and take part in other assigned projects.
- Cross-train on other payroll streams so you can provide backup support when needed.
- Offer direction and support to Payroll Administrators.
What we are looking for
- At least 2 to 3 years of payroll experience, including multi-state U.S. payroll processing.
- A Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation is mandatory.
- Post-secondary study in payroll, accounting, or a closely related area is an advantage.
- Background in transportation or logistics is preferred but not essential.
- Solid knowledge of payroll legislation in both Canada and the United States is an asset.
- Strong planning, organization, and time management abilities in a high-volume, deadline-focused setting.
- Excellent accuracy, numerical confidence, and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage several tasks at once and adapt quickly in a fast-moving environment.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal ability.
- Comfortable using Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Experience with Great Plains or TMW is considered beneficial.
