Role and Location
This opportunity is based in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, a vibrant Okanagan city known for its lakefront, outdoor recreation, vineyards, orchards, arts, and year-round amenities. The role is located at Kelowna General Hospital, one of Interior Health’s major tertiary care centres.
About the Organization and Facility
Interior Health is looking for a medical microbiologist to join its regional team in September 2027. The team supports four microbiology laboratories located in Kelowna, Kamloops, Trail, and Cranbrook, and works closely with a broad network of infection control practitioners across the region.
Kelowna General Hospital is a leading healthcare centre in British Columbia with about 400 beds and more than 84,000 emergency department visits each year. It includes the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre, which contains 12 specialized operating rooms for a wide range of surgical disciplines, including two rooms dedicated to cardiac surgery. The hospital also features a modern maternity unit, neonatal intensive care, expanded emergency and ambulatory care services, new medical inpatient units, a rooftop helipad, pediatric care, adolescent and adult psychiatry units, and advanced laboratory and clinical departments. It also serves as a teaching centre connected to the Southern Medical Program and the University of British Columbia.
Role Overview
In this position, you will help oversee regional laboratory services and contribute to clinical consultation related to bacteriology, mycology, and molecular testing. You will also provide input into the regional Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) program and take part in a clinically focused on-call rotation shared with six microbiologists.
Compensation and Terms
This is a clinical service contract role. Pay is tied to a provincially negotiated salary grid, with estimated remuneration set at 90% of $380,812–$423,125 in the first year, 95% in the second year, and 100% from the third year onward.
Relocation Support and Incentives
Relocation funding may be available, subject to eligible receipts and maximum reimbursement limits. The amounts are $9,000 for moves within British Columbia, $12,000 for moves elsewhere in Canada, and $15,000 for candidates relocating from outside Canada. Incentive programs may change, and the final rates will be confirmed when an offer is made.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The preferred candidate will bring practical experience in bacteriology, mycology, molecular testing, and IPAC. The role also calls for excellent people skills to work effectively with administrative leaders, hospital teams, infection control professionals, and laboratory staff.
